Ball Sq Convenience Store Open

I didn't see a sign with hours posted, but the Tufts Convenience store in the old White Hen spot in Ball Square is now open. I didn't go in, but the inventory looks a little more basic (and perhaps realistic) than the previous incarnation.

Ginger beer

Anyone know who is a local purveyor of Barritts's Ginger Beer? I am craving a Dark and Stormy. TIA.

MWRA asks all communities in Greater Boston to stop using water

Due to a major leak in an aqueduct MWRA is telling us not to use water and to boil anything we do use.

See here for details:

FYI - Bottled water isn't necessarily safe either...

Bottled water isn't tested for bacteria. (An NRDC study found that about 1/3 of bottled water tested was found to be contaminated by things including bacteria, arsenic, and synthetic organic compounds.)

So your best bet, for drinking water in Somerville right now, is to get FILTERED water, with a water filter that has a micron rating of 1.0 or less.

Or boil your tap water, like the MWRA recommends, until further notice.

Or drink your rainwater you've collected in your rain barrel (and you can filter or boil it if you like, as well). :-)

Leak fixed but boil-water order still in effect

The latest update on the water situation: http://www.mwra.com/updates/leak.html#latest

UPDATE 8:47 PM May 1, 2010

MWRA has been able to stop the leak at the pipe in Weston. Water is now being delivered through the emergency back-up reservoir system. Water pressure is stable.

Please remember that a Boil Water is in effect for the following communities until otherwise notifies [sic] and water use should be restricted to essential use only.
