Somerville, Where the 4th of July is Celebrated in June

Speaking of things that go boom...

The City of Somerville starts its 4th of July celebration this week:

Thursday, June 26th

Beginning at 6:30 pm, the Independence Day celebration at Trum Field (on Broadway between Ball and Magoun Squares) will include musical entertainment and the largest fireworks display to date.

Fireworks are set to begin at approximately 9:15 pm.  The rain date for the event is Saturday, July 5th.

Saturday, June 28th

Family Fun Day, scheduled for Saturday, June 28th from noon – 5:00 pm, will include a community BBQ, watermelon eating contest, inflatable obstacle course, and DJ.  All residents are invited and the event is free of charge.  A rain date has been set for Sunday, July 6th.

I've made it to the picnic the last couple of years.  Think of having the cafeteria staff from elementary school prepare your family picnic.  And then drop your expectations a couple of notches lower.  But, it's free!!

Where is Magoun Square? Should I be worried if I live in Teele?

[identity profile] mderidder.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No, Magoun is the intersection of Medford St. and Broadway.

Thanks!

You'll hear it from Teele Square, yes.

i'm more concerned with parking...

You say that now, but when you experience how loud the fireworks can be, you may change your tune. Not that I'm cranky or anything.

Aw, sad. I love fireworks, especially the way they sound. They remind me of happy summer times!!

Those of us who live near Magoun got a special extra Tom Champion call detailing exactly how and where we will not be able to park. But as long as you aren't trying to park near Magoun, I expect you'll be fine.

Maybe the whole city got that call? I got it, and I'm nowhere near Magoun.

[identity profile] ukelele.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. I got two calls. The first was very detailed and specific information about parking restrictions near Trum Field, indicated that only area residents got it, and said that there would be a subsequent call to all Somerville residents. Then the second, which I assume went to everyone. I have not listened closely (I'm sorry, Tom Champion! Forgive me!).

Oh, I see. I only got the second call, then.

NIfty to know...I have something to do that night so I'll have to make sure I don't go home that way.

Every year they say its bigger and better. I hope this year it truly is as I think Nstar and Cataldo Ambulance donated towards it :)

I don't know about bigger and better, but it sets off car alarms all down my street every year. :P

We go every year. It's noisy and late for a kiddo, but it's the Fourth of July (the 26th of June?). It's supposed to be noisy and late.

better luck next time

Fireworks. On a work night. A full week before the day before Independence Day.

My feelings run more to "...aaand the rooockets' red FAAAAIL; the FAIL bursting in aiiiirrr...." I like fireworks and I love a summer band concert, but I'm obliged to miss this one.

I'm fairly new to this area, and I'm pretty close to where the fireworks will be happening-- I just don't understand why people can't park around the area... I have an off-street space, so I'm alright; but will people be sitting in my yard or something?

If you mean Cedar Street and Broadway, probably the parking is prohibited because those streets are going to fill wall-to-wall with pedestrians watching the fireworks.
