Shop Small MA Presents Somerville Holiday Markets
Shop Small MA will host markets at Warehouse XI and La Brasa before teaming up with Courtney O’Keefe to co-host a final market in the main hall of the historic Armory.

Somerville, MA - Shop Small MA has teamed up with Tiny Turns Paperie and Courtney O’Keefe to present holiday markets spread across Somerville this season. Vendors will be setting up shop in Warehouse XI (11 Sanborn Court), La Brasa (124 Broadway) and the main hall of the historic Armory (191 Highland Avenue) with crafted goods perfect to conquer anyone’s shopping list. These events are free to the public (with a suggested $3 donation at the door for the Armory Market).

“Goods made from local artists adds a special touch that you can’t really get from big box, corporate items,” said Shop Small MA founder Vanessa Yip. “There’s an incredible community that is born from buying local. It spurs economic growth and keeps our amazing crafts people in business. It’s a win / win.”

The Union Square Holiday Market, presented by Tiny Turns Paperie and Shop Small MA, will be held at Warehouse XI on Friday December 13 from 4-10pm and Saturday December 14 from 10-6pm. The E-Som Market will be held on Tuesday December 17 from 5-10pm at La Brasa. The Wrap It Up! Winter Market at the Armory on Sunday December 22 from 11-5pm is your last call to shop small (you can also sip while you shop at the Armory, with the Armory bar offering a selection of wine, as well as beers from event sponsors Narragansett Beer and Notch Brewing.)

“Please remember to use cash when paying for goods at these markets. This helps our vendors avoid credit card fees and boosts profits,” added Armory market co-host Courtney O’Keefe. “These events are also surrounded by amazing locally owned, independent businesses and restaurants. Make it a point to frequent those with cash in hand not only before or after attending the market, but all year round!”

Astonishingly, posting here about the mutant bike found it a new home!

Next up: Is there any obvious local charity to which to donate a couple dozen Christmas-themed mugs? Or, failing a charity: anybody want these? These, I can deliver. Must take all of them (however many that turns out to be.)

The City of Somerville is having a Veterans' Memorial Parade this Sunday, November 4, one week before the holiday it is celebrating. This appears to be a "make-up" of the rain-cancelled Memorial Day parade (which had also been scheduled to occur one week before that holiday).

The parade starts at noon at City Hall, running down Highland Avenue, through Davis Square, and up Holland Street to end in Teele Square (not at the Veterans' Cemetery on Clarendon Hill).

does anyone know where i can get a fake syringe? fake as in "this looks real but isn't" or "there is no way anyone would think this is an actual syringe". i'm going to a halloween party dressed as a serial killer (because they look like everyone else :D ) and kind of want to bring a tool of the trade. i'd probably fill it with water tinted blue or something.

(my other option is to bring a cereal box for the pun of it.)

The Davis Square CVS had these signs up inside and outside the store yesterday, limiting what you were supposed to buy there on Christmas Day I didn't try to buy anything, so I have no idea whether this was actually enforced in any way. The self-checkout terminals were still working.

Neither of the other two CVS stores I visited yesterday, at South Station and Harvard Square, had these signs.

Back in 2014, the store had a similar sign up for Thanksgiving, but I didn't get a photo then.

My daughter would like to view the Boston fireworks, but not from up close (i.e., dealing with crowds). Suggestions on where in Somerville we could go for a decent view of the Boston sky tomorrow night?
[personal profile] ron_newman
Yes, it's that time again. Broadway between Ball and Magoun Squares will be closed to traffic this Thursday, June 29, for a street party starting at 6:30 pm followed by fireworks at 9:15 pm. Before the fireworks, enjoy outdoor performances by the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band, local Disco-Funk band Booty Vortex, and the Somerville Sunsetters.

Full details, including other street closures and parking restrictions, here.

...right in front of my apartment at the dead end of Highland Road.

I had no idea why there were at least three police SUVs parked there w/their blue lights on as I came walking down from Highland Ave., until I saw the two guys in handcuffs and the rather large piles of packages, mostly from Amazon, piled up on the sidewalk in front of my place; after the (apparent) perps were hauled away, I asked the remaining cops if that was what was up, and they confirmed it.  So, if you were expecting a package and it hasn't shown up yet, perhaps a trip to the Somerville PD may be in order?...

Saturday December 24, 6:30 pm

Bundle up the kids, grab your menorah and join us for a night of light and fun! Together we will enjoy latkes, dreidls, singing, and a casual music jam. We will be making havdallah and lighting candles together at 6:45 pm. You are invited to bring your musical instruments as well as your chanukiah (menorah) or share in lighting one of ours. Contributions towards a potluck dinner are welcome.

My SO and I finally managed to get tickets to the Illuminations tour-- in past years we either missed the date they went on sale, or just couldn't make the tour date(s). I am a hobby photographer and would love to try out some night shots on the tour, but can't find two pieces of information to help guide me in what lens(es) to bring and whether it'll be possible. Hope you guys can help!

1) Are the trolleys the kind that are basically outdoor seating, where everyone kind of sits facing outward (aka like one of the old SF cable cars)? Or are they the kinds that are really just buses with trolley-like exteriors and everyone is inside behind glass?

2) Do the trolleys tend to stop, or at least realllly slow down, at the houses? Or do they more or less just cruise by at a decent clip?

Thanks!
