Did the timing change on the lights on 16?

Did the timing of the traffic lights change on 16? There's always traffic going towards Alewife in the morning, but its been unusually heavy even not at peak times. ex. the people making a left turn into Cambridge never used to back up the other lanes, but now they stretch almost to Broadway. Or is there some unusual construction downstream of all this?

The area around Alewife has been ridiculously backed up for the past few weeks. I approach it from rte 2 (coming from Concord) in the mornings and away in the evenings and it's felt like there's been way more traffic than normal.

Yeah, I've noticed too. Thought it was just the usual warm weather increase in congestion but maybe not. I know there's been some construction around the T stop but don't know if it's affecting traffic. It certainly affects bikers and pedestrians, though!

A friend of mine just had a head-on bike-on-bike accident there, on the narrow path that bikes are currently detoured to next to the T station's east headhouse.

That's a scary corner right now. I'm always afraid I'm going to have a head-on-head accident there. It's only wide enough for one bike, and you can't see around the corner. One day last week, there was a flagger there with a STOP sign, but usually it's bike at your own risk.

Its been driving me crazy when I go to work in the mornings. I sit on Broadway for multiple lights.

I take 16 home at night and it seems pretty normal heading into to town for peak hours...

But we take I95 in to work in the morning (away from the city) and traffic has been ridiculously obscene for no reason for the last few weeks.

I think it's everywhere...

I think there's a foreign-language school on the premises, not directly affiliated with either St. Sava or Matignon. I can't remember if it's a grade school or high school.

International School of Boston (formerly Ecole Bilingue) has grades 1 to 12 at 45 Matignon.

The red tailed hawks' nest out by Alewife/Fresh Pond has been drawing lots of media attention and visitors recently: http://www.boston.com/news/local/gallery/05_18_10_red_tailed_hawk_nest/

Are there more pedestrians pushing the button at Mass Ave/16?

I have no trouble crossing without pushing the button, and I wish more people would avoid pushing it if they don't need the extra crossing time, especially if they're going to cross before the walk phase anyway.

The MWRA is doing construction in Arlington Center, which is turning Pleasant and Lake Streets in Arlington into parking lots. Since these two roads are common ways to get to Rt. 2, perhaps some people are taking 16 to avoid Arlington Center? The construction is supposed to continue for at least the next 8 to 10 weeks.
