Just a reminder: If you are a Somerville Artist (either live in Somerville, or have a studio here), today is that last day to register for Somerville Open Studios.

SOS this year will be April 30th and May 1st. Mark your calendars now, participants and visitors alike!

I thought I remembered that if there's a certain amount of snow, we ARE allowed to throw the snow into the street when we shovel it. Do I remember incorrectly? and if not, what is the magic amount? Have we hit it yet?

I'm a little concerned about my back, to throw the snow on top of the pile that's already as tall as I am...

Also, does there come a point when Somerville OFFICIALLY says "You know what? No, you can't park on the even side of the street until further notice, sorry." We know that there's been towing, but it would be nice to know of an official policy...

Does anyone official read this anymore who can give official answers? Does Ron count as official? B-)

Hi everyone!

Sorry to post with another dentist question because the tag is obviously widely used, but most people who've used it seem to have insurance.

Anyone have recommendations for those of us who are uninsured and need just a regular cleaning? (Oh, and also to prove to me that I don't have oral cancer, but I figure that'll just be part of them poking around in there...)

I'm in grad school, so money is obviously pretty tight. I would like to pay under $100 if possible.

As we were getting ready for school, we noticed a back up of cars... Come to find that a school bus drove down our street and had trouble towards Holland w/ cars parked on both sides; it did get through, but not before damaging some side mirrors. This afternoon around 1:15, as I dashed out for a quick errand, I noticed snow and ice blocking driveways and no cars on the even side. I talked to my neighbor who said at some point, cars on the even side were towed and snow removal trucks came by.

Driving down Park Ave to get to College Ave a bit later, I saw that they must have done the same there too.

Mood: a bit sore from shoveling chunks of ice and snow out of my driveway cut, and not looking forward to the next storm :-(

From the ResiStat mailing list:

Wow. This snow really seems to be unrelenting. Here is an explanation of the some of the efforts the City is going through to prepare for the next few days.

In accordance with the City's Snow Emergency Procedures, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has announced that a snow emergency will be in effect for the City of Somerville as of 10:00 p.m. on Monday, January 31st. During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted).

Cars not moved by 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday will be ticketed and towed. Residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal or school lot for the duration of the emergency. A list of available city lots and other relevant information may be found on the City's website at http://www.somervillema.gov/spotlight.cfm?id=90

Also, the city is closing some streets tonight for snow removal. I e-mailed Daniel Hadley at ResiStat and he sent me this list:

Subdivision of One Benton Road Revisited

Gather round, children while we revisit the story of the Giobbe House, a beautiful historic structure sitting atop a rolling green hill that was gutted and destroyed by an out-of-town developer for the purpose of constructing condos. Come closer while I remind you of that developer's fight to further subdivide the already compromised landscape in order to build a second condo structure, despite their awareness of the environmental and traffic problems it will cause the city if given the approval to go forward, as well as the fact that after nearly a year on the market, one of the units in the current structure has yet to be sold. Finally, learn how Somerville residents have thus far prevented the proposed subdivision by working with the Board of Aldermen, resulting in the denial of the proposal by the Somerville Office of Strategic Development and Planning Board and are continuing to fight by attempting to force a denial of the realtor's upcoming appeal.
