According to the Tufts Daily, the owners of Dave's are going to open a restaurant and bar called Semolina Kitchen and Bar in late spring on the edge of the Tufts campus, near the Collaborative Innovation and Learning Complex at 574 Boston Ave. This the is big renovation Tufts did to the warehouse-like space across from St. Clement's.

“We’re going to be open in the morning for coffee, pastries … and a more continental-type breakfast, and then [we’ll] go into lunch and then into dinner,” Theophanis said.

The new restaurant will be a causal place for food and drink, Theophanis said. In addition, there will be take-out service and a pizza oven.

Seems like an odd place for anything other than a weekday lunch place for students & faculty. There's not much after hours traffic down there.

Doing a little research, it looks like this is the space, which I just assumed was Tufts property:

I guess it's been in the works for a while:

I was checking out the Tufts football schedule for this season and noticed that the Sept. 24th home game is slated to start at 6 pm. Considering the games usually take 3 hours and need time (and lights) for overtime, that seemed off. Most Tufts games start between noon and 1:30.

I checked today... the field doesn't have any recently installed lights, but this tweet seems to confirm that the game will be a night game:

Tufts Football
‏@tuftsfootball
We're just 1 month from kickoff under the lights at the Ellis Oval!! #LightsCameraBos #BostonsNESCACTeam #RollBos

I expect a different vibe for the neighborhood with a night game. If successful, it might signal a change in the pattern for the future.

Bomb threats on a day finals are scheduled aren't that unusual, but someone setting a car on fire, supposedly as part of the same action, is.

The car was apparently parked behind the Tufts Student Health Center at 124 Professors Row and belonged to an employee at the health center. A note was left which referenced labor issues between Tufts and the SEIU, which represents their janitors. The student group which is organized around the labor issues denied any connection to the events.

Assuming the GLX goes ahead, the Tufts building that will house a stop at the university will include a sky bridge to the campus. This article in the Fall 2015 issue of Tufts Magazine gives some background on the alumnus who's funding the building's construction. Thought it might be of interest to some in the Davis periphery, and hope it's not too far afield to warrant posting...

Tufts University plans to construct a 100,000-square-foot academic building above the MBTA’s College Avenue station in Medford, along with a footbridge that will connect the new facility to the Medford/Somerville campus.

On Monday, June 15, Tufts University along with Somerville, Medford, and State public safety teams, will conduct a routine emergency preparedness training exercise. Starting at 7 a.m. police vehicles, ambulances, and fire engines will be deployed on and near campus. All activities will be simulated. They are not a response to an actual emergency. Emergency vehicles taking part in the training will not use lights or sirens when moving about, but may use them within the restricted exercise area.

The exercise is scheduled to end at noon, but emergency vehicles will be on campus into the afternoon while participants review the exercise. The exercise will be similar to an exercise held 2 years ago. Activities will require that Professors Row be closed from College Avenue to Packard Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Tisch Library will be closed until 2 p.m. For more information visit http://emergency.tufts.edu .

This is what I'll consider "well outside" of Davis proper, but I figure enough folks in the vicinity of Tufts read this community and also might be packing to move that it makes sense to post here.

Free Moving Boxes, in good, clean, dry condition, broken down, in a stack, at the corner of Chester Ave and Winthrop St. in the church parking lot.

I will have to move them if they aren't taken, but that seems like a good place for now.

If you walk by the Tufts University fields along Powderhouse Boulevard, you'll notice one of the fields is covered in AS Roma banners (they're in the field directly to the east/southeast of the track).

http://www.asroma.it/

As you may have seen, AS Roma is scheduled to play a friendly against Liverpool FC at Fenway Park on July 23 (Wednesday).

http://nesn.com/2014/07/tickets-for-july-23-liverpool-roma-soccer-game-at-fenway-park-on-sale/

Based on the banners and the fact Roma is playing in Boston in two days, it seems reasonable to conclude one of Europe's top soccer teams will be working out right here in Somerville, which is pretty cool. Also, it makes sense a team from Rome would feel at home next to a chaotic rotary.

Of course, maybe there's another explanation: It could be a PR event or a youth soccer-camp event, or maybe the AS Roma advance team took a wrong turn off Mass Ave. and ended up at Tufts and said, "Hey, a chaotic rotary, feels like home. Let's plant our banners here."

Anyone have details? Did I miss an announcement somewhere? My brief Internet search yielded no results.

Museum Studies students at Tufts were given a challenge: choose an image that inspires you from the photographs in Historic New England's exhibition, The Camera's Coast, and use it as a jumping-off point for a full-blown exhibition plan. From May 6-18, Tufts University Art Gallery will host an exhibition that will offer a peek into their minds, with mini-exhibitions showing what each of them came up with. The student-planned exhibitions range far and wide from the source collection, which depicts late 19th and early 20th century life in coastal New England. They focus on such diverse topics as fashion and food; labor and leisure; immigration, shipwrecks, maritime voyages and social mores of the past and present. These fifteen curators from a variety of disciplines demonstrate the many paths the imagination can take when challenged to design a dream exhibition around a single photograph.

On Saturday, April 26th, Childish Gambino (the alter ego of actor/writer/comedian Donald Glover of Community) will headline Tufts' outdoor Spring Fling event. Tickets are limited to students, alumni and faculty/staff, but you can always hang out across the street and listen in.

How many stories can an object tell? That’s the question fifteen students in the Tufts University Museums Studies Program explore in Snapshots: 15 Takes on an Exhibition, opening Tuesday, May 6th in the Koppelman Gallery at Tufts University. On view until Sunday, May 18th, experience a sampling of the stories they have uncovered.

The opening is from 5:30-8 pm in the Koppelman gallery on Tuesday, May 6 -- that's three weeks from today,  (I'll post one last plug the weekend before). The gallery is inside the Aidekman Arts Center, essentially the nearest part of the Tufts campus to Powderhouse Square that isn't a field, a twelve-minute walk from Davis Square. Admission to all public events in the Koppelman gallery is free, with a suggested donation of $3.

Somerville Times article
Wicked Local/Somerville Journal article

from the Times article: "Next week, a community meeting originally planned to continue discussions of the Tufts proposal will now instead offer the community an opportunity to discuss this news as well as next steps. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m., at the TAB Building, 169 Holland St."

Join us overnight as myriad spaces in the Granoff Music Center fill with music from all corners of the Tufts campus. Come and go or arrive and remain, and at the end you will shout “Encore!” This special series of events with all-new performances will benefit the Tufts large ensemble touring program.

Distler Performance Hall and Fisher Performance Room, Granoff Music Center

Free & open to the public

I was wondering how "benefit" and "free" fit together and found this:
The event will feature fundraisers to help student musicians perform outside of Tufts and go on tour. Entrance to the event, however, will remain free of charge.

P.S., I'm also surprised to note that the organizers successfully figured out the event is actually in Somerville, rather than the default "Medford" usually given to all Tufts locations.

Hi all, if you're not familiar with the Koppleman Gallery in Aidekman Arts Center, it is one of the nearest points of the Tufts campus to Powderhouse Square -- just past the field -- so it's a stone's throw from Davis. I am one of the co-curators for this particular exhibition, so it's shameless plug time, but any of you interested in art (or in this case, history and art) should keep this gallery on your radar.

Snapshots: 15 Takes on an Exhibition is to take place at the Tufts University Koppleman Gallery May 6-18, 2014. Opening reception Tuesday, May 6, 2014, 5:30-8pm.

Does anyone know when and where the next meeting open to the community is about Tufts plans for the old Powderhouse School?  Is there any updated info from Feb. meetings posted somewhere?  Thanks!
