The MBTA will begin demolishing the Ball Square Bowling alley tomorrow, according to the "Construction Update" email that the City of Somerville sent me last week.

  • Starting Monday, April 22, crews will begin demolishing four buildings on Boston Ave. near the Broadway intersection, where the new Ball Square T station will be. Demo and debris removal will continue throughout the week between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., requiring lane shifts around the work zone.

According to the Somerville News Weekly, the alley closed in November, 2017. They also have a photo of the BOWLING sign being removed last month. (I do not really recommend The Somerville News Weekly, but I cannot find any other source for these two news items.)

Long-time readers of this group and its LiveJournal predecessor may recall a big party that we held there in February 2010, organized by [personal profile] plumtreeblossom. Here is a Flickr album from that night, including some backstage photos of the pin-setting machinery.

The Davis Square area will be subject to some bridge closures and traffic re-routings as a result of the construction of the Green Line Extension.

Or vice versa?

Nextbus.com prediction pages for MBTA buses now say:

"NextBus is no longer supplying predictions for MBTA. Please go to https://www.mbta.com/mbta-endorsed-apps or https://www.mbta.com/customer-support for more information."

Does anybody know more about this? Like why it's happening? And does anybody know a non-app, desktop-accessible alternative?

Just got this email (and slightly irritated that it wasn't announced further in advance – I would have liked to have been there, and could have, if given adequate warning) concerning the MassAve corridor:
The Town of Arlington, the City of Cambridge, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) are collaborating on a bus priority pilot funded by a grant from the Barr Foundation. The pilot, coming fall 2018, will include features of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on Massachusetts Avenue, serving the MBTA Routes 77, 79, and 350, with the goals of reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions. Come learn more about bus rapid transit, Arlingtons bus priority pilot project, and the successful bus priority pilots in other communities.

A public meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 16. Details about the meeting time and location are below. For more information on this public meeting, visit the Town of Arlingtons project website here [ https://www.arlingtonma.gov/Home/Components/Calendar/Event/18464/3711?curm=5&cury=2018 ].

Because of Longfellow Bridge construction, bus shuttles will replace Red Line service between Kendall and Park Street for two weekends, April 21-22 and April 28-29.

The bridge will be closed to car traffic but open for pedestrians and bicycles (who will need to share the upstream sidewalk in both directions).

Due to the severe weather forecast, the GLX public meeting scheduled for WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7TH, 6:30 – 8:00 PM, at Somerville High School Auditorium, has been cancelled.

The meeting will be rescheduled as soon as possible and a new notice will be issued promptly.

For more information on the GLX project, please visit www.greenlineextension.org.

I have a friend coming in from out of town on Thursday. They're planning on using the T to get around. I recommended getting a CharlieCard as opposed to a CharlieTicket, for convenience, but where does one score one?

According to the handy "locate a place with CharlieCards" doohicky on the New!Improved! mbta.com, the one source in Davis is... Tedeschi.

Soooo does anyone know if the 7-Eleven the Tedeschi turned into has adopted the sacred trust of distributing free blank CharlieCards to the good people of Camberville? Or where else one can get one?

ETA: Just realized, it also lists the Johnnie's Foodmaster on Alewife Brook Parkway which turned into a Stop-n-Shop... how many years ago? Not feeling really trusting of this list, mbta.com.

ETA2: Nov 3: the 7-Eleven does indeed have CharlieCards and was quite willing to give us a blank one, though my friend decided to buy a 7-day pass on the spot. All set!

From The Boston Globe:

New Green Line stations are delayed until 2021

The delay for the seven new stations for the Green Line extension into Somerville and Medford pushes the project back yet again.

The Red Line will be replaced with buses between Kendall and Park Street stations for the next two weekends, July 9-10 and 16-17, because of the Longfellow Bridge reconstruction project. I think they are temporarily moving the Red Line tracks on the bridge again.

Snippet:

....It is our understanding that the new cost estimate for the GLX will retain core program elements including seven light rail transit stations including a spur to Union Square, a Vehicle Maintenance Facility, a Community Path, and related utility upgrades. With that clear understanding, it is our intention as Mayor of the City of Somerville and City Manager of Cambridge to recommend to the Somerville Board of Aldermen and the Cambridge City Council that our cities commit to underwriting project costs for specific, tangible elements that would deliver meaningful public safety and quality-of-life benefits for our residents.

After discussions with the state, the needed value of new financial participation in the GLX for the City of Somerville is projected to be $50 million and the value of the City of Cambridge’s contribution is projected at $25 million, including financial contributions from the North Point developers, to close the funding gap. Again, any contribution will be subject to Board and City Council approvals....

The page also has a link to a letter from our state legislators who are miffed that tonight's final GLX meeting was cancelled.

Now that exterior construction on 240 Elm Street is wrapping up, the T has moved its bus stop back to where it was -- the southeast corner of Elm and Chester streets, in front of where Dunkin Donuts was. This bus stop serves eastbound routes 87, 88, 90, and 96.

When I walked by there an hour ago, some people hadn't realized this and were still waiting in front of Buffalo Exchange.

The next MassDOT/MBTA public meeting in Somerville to seek input on the re-evaluation of the of the Green Line Extension (GLX) project will be held this Wednesday, April 13: Somerville High School Auditorium

Open house: 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm, presentation and Q&A: 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Under particular scrutiny for cuts during this re-evaluation are:

- The Community Path Extension
- The GLX Union Square T-Stop
- The GLX extension to Route 16

Read what Mayor Joe Curtatone wrote last week about the importance of this meeting on Wednesday and the need to keep community pressure on the GLX project:

Due to the Floating Slab Project, buses will replace Red Line trains between Alewife and Harvard Square Stations in both directions from start to end of service during the following weekends:

- Saturday, March 26, 2016.
- Saturday, April 2, 2016, through Sunday, April 3, 2016.
- Saturday, April 9, 2016, through Sunday, April 10, 2016.
- Saturday, April 23, 2016, through Sunday, April 24, 2016.

Regular Red Line train service will resume at the start of service on Sunday, March 27, 2016, as well as the Monday after weekend shuttle bus diversions. All shuttle bus stops are accessible for persons with disabilities.

The re-evaluation of the GLX project by Mass DOT is moving along quickly. It is very important to remind the MBTA and Mass DOT that we want the Green Line Extesnion (all the way to Route 16) and the Community Path constructed.

Wednesday, March 23: Tufts University, Cohen Auditorium, 40 Talbot Ave. Medford
Wednesday, April 13: Somerville High School Auditorium, Somerville
Wednesday, April 27: St. Anthony's Parish Hall, 400 Cardinal Medeiros Ave., Cambridge
Thursday, May 5: St. Clement's Parish Hall, 579 Boston Ave., Medford

Open House: 5:30 - 6:30 pm Presentation + Q&A: 6:30 - 9:00 pm

The reason the GLX has progressed as far as it has over the last decade is in no small part due to the dogged and determined advocacy for the project by the communities of Somerville, Medford, and Cambridge (including the great turnout at the public meeting on March 2nd at the Armory).

from T Alerts:

Due to the Longfellow Bridge Project, buses will replace Red Line trains between Park Street and Kendall/MIT Stations in both directions from start to end of service on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Regular Red Line train service will resume at the start of service on Sunday, March 13, 2016.

The Green Line Extension Project Working Group will meet to hear from the State:

Friday, Feb 5, 10am-12pm
The Center for Arts at the Armory
191 Highland Ave.

This meeting will be open to public comments. Please come show support for the Green Line Extension -- make sure your voice is heard as we fight for a Green Line Extension to serve our community.

You will also hear:
- Where things stand right now, including next steps and timelines

- Preliminary redesign concepts - an early peek at some of the
options they're exploring to bring down costs

- Project budget overview

Two proposals are of particular concern:

1. Eliminating the Union Square station. The substitutes considered -- shuttle buses, a commuter rail stop, single track light rail shuttle to Lechmere -- provide much less desirable service and could hamstring the planned development of Union Square / Boynton Yards. These alternatives had previously been evaluated and rejected during earlier planning.

2. Relocating the Community Path. Portions may be forced onto roadways shared with cars and trucks, and it is not clear how the Path could cross the Fitchburg Line near Brickbottom.
