My roommate and I just moved to a new place and the landlord has left it a total mess, especially the kitchen and bathroom (think grease and mildew). While we can handle light cleaning, this is much more than we were prepared for, so we're looking into hiring someone to do a one-time heavy cleaning as soon as possible.

If anyone can recommend a good, reasonably-priced cleaning service, please share your wisdom. :)

The landlord is supposed to rent you a place that is habitable according to the sanitary code (http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=cagoterminal&L=4&L0=Home&L1=Consumer+Protection&L2=Home+%26+Housing&L3=Landlord+and+Tenant+Law&sid=Cago&b=terminalcontent&f=consumer_state_sanitary_code&csid=Cago). If they won't clean it for you promptly, it may be worthwhile to call Inspectional Services to take a look, and perhaps to seek legal advice about getting part of your rent back and getting the landlord to pay for a cleaning service.

I second Alda Gutierrez/Smile Cleaning. She's cleaned my house for seven years. I'm also a landlord and I've had her clean up after tenants left the downstairs apartment in unrentable condition (think the stove not cleaned at all for over 2 years, the kitchen and bath smelling so bad that the apprentices working for the contractor we had complained about how filthy the place was.)

It sounds like it's habitable but dirty. Mildew and grease aren't up on the level of things such as roaches or black mold.

but i would deduct the cost of the cleaning.

if i'm supposed to leave a place non-broken, and broom clean, i DO rather expect the place to be at least that good, if not spotless.

consider it a warning sign of your landlords future intentions... oh, and take pictures of EVERYTHING before you get too moved in, for your before pictures, when you move out. "nope, sorry, that was like that when we moved in, got pictures right here..."

We took pictures and the issue has been resolved. The landlord is out of state and hires contractors to handle everything here, so I think it was a miscommunication issue rather than an integrity issue.
