If you are going the DIY route in order to get a detergent without additives, you might be interested in Charlie's Soap (http://www.charliesoap.com/products.asp?cartID=29E3B7836CCB4607B499CC3FCAC0376E). No whiteners, softeners, fragrance, anything. We've been using it happily for 3 years. You can buy a small pack at Isis Maternity (it's used a lot for cloth diapers) to try it, and if you like it you can order a giant tub from the manufacturer. (It's been a 3 year supply for us!).
