Saturday August 13, 8:30 PM

Tisha b’Av commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples. In keeping with the theme of mourning losses the Jewish people have suffered, at the Havurah we read by candlelight or flashlight, don't greet each other before or after the service, and those who are able to sit on the floor. In addition to chanting Eicha (Lamentations) we sing mournful songs. Although sad, it can be a powerful experience and we hope you'll join us.

The city's annual pre-4th-of-July fireworks display will take place at Trum Field next Thursday, June 30, at about 9:15 pm. As usual, a street party on Broadway will precede the fireworks, starting at 6 pm, this year featuring the 215th Army Band, local Disco-Funk band Booty Vortex, the USO Metropolitan New York Performers, and the Somerville Sunsetters.

Also at Trum Field, the city's annual Family Fun Day will happen this Saturday, June 25, from noon to 4 pm, featuring community BBQ, pony rides, train rides, children’s activities, face painting, music, and more.

Full details, including traffic and parking restrictions, are in this official city press release.

(A note on the Subject line: we've been using it, or some variation thereof, ever since [livejournal.com profile] josephineave first posted it in 2008.)

Hey Everyone!!

Starts at 1 pm at City Hall, marches down Highland Avenue to Davis Square, Holland Street to Teele Square, and Broadway to the veterans' cemetery on Clarendon Hill.

Full details here, including parking restrictions and street closures. Of special note:
The 2016 parade will feature 21 performing groups, including new bands and performers such as: The Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps from Nashua, NH; The Freedom Trail Band (first LGBT band to perform in the parade); OUTVETS, marching in honor of LGBT Veterans; and the Blues Brothers: Next Generation performing group.

(Cambridge also has a parade, on Monday morning. Nobody seems to ever know about it, and it's sparsely attended.)

The Mark Wahlburg movie "Patriots' Day", about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, will have scenes filmed in the Teele Square neighborhood starting this Wednesday and continuing through the long weekend.

This leaflet, which was posted to reddit's Somerville forum, details traffic and parking restrictions related to the filming from April 13-18.

(Watertown and UMass-Dartmouth already said no to location shoots for this movie, but for some reason Somerville is letting them film here.)

This week's print edition of The Somerville News Weekly, a local alleged newspaper, has Happy Easter & Happy Passover as its main above-the-fold headline. Nobody there bothered to learn that Passover starts a month later than Easter this year, on the evening of April 22.

The wittiest spiel for blocks around, homemade hamantashen, groggers, the whole Magilla - Havurat Shalom's Purim party is great fun and you are warmly invited to join us! We're providing a pizza and salad dinner. And of course, there'll be spiel between reading chapters of the Book of Esther. Costumes encouraged, but not required.

Havurat Shalom is a small, lay-led, egalitarian Jewish community. We include folks with a wide range of Jewish backgrounds and practices.

NB: we regret that due to a flood, the wheelchair ramp and 1st floor bathroom will not be in service during Purim. There is a bathroom on the 2nd floor.

We still have 14 Christmas trees to be sold for Healthy Tomorrow, to raise money for our project in Mali, stopping female genital mutilation. We've been selling them for $25 but we'll take less. In fact, if you don't want to give us money but do want a tree, please come and get it. The trees must find homes. We can't be responsible for having them cut down only to be made into mulch. Come take one of the trees that are leaning on the Unity Church, corner College Ave and William St, and then put money in the envelope on my side porch next door at 14 William St (or not). There's a saw there that you can borrow to cut the bottom off so it takes up water better and also twine to tie it onto your car. All money goes to support StopExcision.net.

We sold some Christmas trees at our week-end fundraiser for Healthy Tomorrow but we have some left. They are leaning up against Unity Church at the corner of College Ave and William Street. Take one and put at least $25 in the envelope on the side porch of the house next door, 14 William St. Use the saw on top of the brochures to cut the end so the tree takes up water better. All the money goes to stopping female genital mutilation in Mali. See StopExcision.net or call Susan at (617) 776-6524 for more information.

The Somerville Bicycle Committee and Somerville Arts Council present the sixth annual Illumination Bicycle Tour this Saturday, December 19. Meet at 5:50 pm in front of Somerville High School for a wintry ride among warmly lit homes. The ride will be about 5-6 miles long, with stops at many of the Illuminations Trolley Tour highlights, and should end by 7:30.

I'm not even partially in charge of the event anymore, but this appears to be the route map, similar to what we did last year. The route has provisions for a longer or shorter ride depending on weather.

Please dress warmly and festoon your bike with lights, the more festive the better.

Here's the ride's Facebook event.

but I only just now found out about it, from Facebook. Usually I get drafted into volunteering for this event, but this year I didn't even hear about it. Here's a poster I found on Davis Squared's page (click to embiggen):

On Sunday, December 13th, join the 19th Annual Ciclismo Classico Jingle Ride. This leisurely and festive singing bike parade goes from Arlington to Boston and back. The 22-mile bicycle ride rolls through Harvard Square, the Esplanade, Boston Common, and Newbury Street – we stop and sing carols at local landmarks, and just parade along showing some creative holiday spirit.

There will be free hot mulled cider and freshly-brewed coffee and pastries thanks to our starting-point hosts at the Kickstand Café. We’ll also enjoy hot cocoa and cookies at Harvard Square, courtesy of the Harvard Square Business Association!

It’s a parade, not a race – so if you have a bicycle, we’d love your holiday spirit along for the ride!

Join the Jingle Ride!
Date: Sunday December 13th, 2015 (ride will be cancelled if there is extreme weather)
Time: registration opens at 10:15 AM, ride leaves promptly at 11 AM
Distance: 22-mile leisurely loop from Arlington to Boston and back
Starting point: Kickstand Café, 594 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington Center, MA
Cost: Suggested donation of $25 (children under 18 are free if accompanied by an adult). All proceeds go to Horizons for Homeless Children.
RSVP is required. Please RSVP at http://jingleride2015.eventbrite.com or contact Francesca at 781-646-3377.

PS: this year we aren't on the same day as the Jingle Bell Run, so you can do both if you'd like :)

With the holidays just around the corner it’s time to start thinking about holiday gifts! There’s no better place to find the perfect gift than at Somerville Local First’s Local is For Lovers Holiday Markets on November 29th and December 20th.

Our first holiday market takes place on Sunday, November 29th, from 10am to 3pm at Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Avenue). This event is FREE and easily accessible by car or public transportation.

The market will feature 34 local vendors selling jewelry, accessories, paper goods, soaps, clothing, housewares, confections, home decor & records. A full list of vendors can be found on our Facebook invite: https://www.facebook.com/events/1218189511540795/

DJ Studebaker Hawk will be spinning records and setting the vibe while you shop!

Kids from the Benjamin G. Brown School "Roots & Shoots" club will be in Davis Square on Monday, October 26th from approx 3:15-4:15 Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF.  Find a kid with an orange UNICEF box and give them some change if you have any to spare.  Kids from the school may also bring UNICEF boxes while trick-or-treating on Halloween night, so have some change waiting by your candy bowl if you want to donate.

Since it's almost Halloween, please allow me to re-post last year's PSA on behalf of the estimated 7-12% of American children with food allergies who will be trick or treating on Saturday.  The choice between a snickers bar and a peanut butter cup seems awesome to someone without allergies.  Not such a great choice for kids allergic to nuts, dairy or eggs.  Buy whatever candy you want as leftovers, but please consider also buying a bag of something allergy friendly. Fruit flavored things are more likely to be safe  (skittles, starburst, lollipops, mike & ikes, dots, twizzlers, swedish fish, fruit snacks, laffy taffy, nerds, smarties, jolly ranchers)  Little toys and other junk are great too.   If you really want to be allergy-friendly, check out the Teal Pumpkin Project http://www.foodallergy.org/teal-pumpkin-project.  Thanks!

Can anyone recommend any awesome Halloween events happening this weekend or next in Somerville?

It seems that, while the trash collectors got Monday off, the enforcement staff didn't.

How many people got ticketed for having their trash out a day early? {sigh}

September 26th is the 10th annual “What the Fluff? A Tribute to Union Square Invention”, a festival celebrating the creation of Fluff in Somerville almost 100 years ago. The 2015 theme will be “Fluff X” – like the Super Bowl, Fluff is now rocking a Roman numeral!

The festival absolutely could not happen without our amazing volunteer crew. If you're looking for a unique Somerville Saturday, volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts in a wide variety of tasks. From the prize booth to kiddie games to the cooking contest, there are jobs to fit every personality. There are opportunities for you and friends to work together, and for mature children to work with their parents. We may be looking for a few expert volunteers to step into "fluff captain" roles so if you covet the straw hat, please let me know.

The Festival is at Union Square Somerville on September 26th (raindate September 27th) from 3 to 7 PM, with volunteers needed in two-hour shifts from 12:30 until 8:00 PM. If you can join us, please let me (Karin) know at volunteer AT unionsquaremain DOT com.

May the fluff be with you!

It's nine days to Purim, has anybody seen poppy-seed hamentaschen for sale locally?

Some years ago, Star Market carried them, but they've stopped; at least, there were none there last night and they don't even have a Purim display this year, so.
