The Rás na hÉireann (Race of Ireland) 5K will be occupying Davis Square this Sunday with an 11:00 AM start time and will include up to 5,000 runners.

The race course is an accurately wheel-measured 5Km, beginning and ending in famous Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts—a stop on the convenient MBTA Red Line. It starts on Elm Street, in front of the Burren, the Sligo, & the Joshua Tree, & runs through an eclectic mix of great Somerville neighborhoods & tree-lined streets. It is mostly lightening flat, & includes Teele Square, Powderhouse Boulevard, & Ball Square.

It runs past Tufts University, and it zips through Ball Square, by Trum Field down Cedar Street. It ends in Davis Square, on Highland Avenue. Post race rewards are visible along the route, as runners will pass some of the pubs involved in the post race parties-- the Burren, the Sligo, the Joshua Tree, Orleans, P.J. Ryan’s, The Pub and Five Horses Tavern.

Anyone know what's up with Theo's? Are they opening under new management as a pizza place, doing basically the same thing? Or some other kind of thing? Or is it all a ruse?

(I remember back when they were Somerville House Of Pizza. Still 666-TADA though... "Satan Surprise! May I take your order?")

(They did not, as far as I know, ever do that. Totally should've.)

Amelia's in Teele Sq was closed and under renovations, and I have noticed the space looking more and more like a new restaurant as I pass by. It sounds like it's a name change but the same management, according to Eater Boston, and they say it is actually open now, with an Italian menu as before (I didn't check.)

Anyone check it out? I loved Amelia's when it first opened, er, 17 years ago according to that blurb, but lately it had fallen off my list of places worth getting back to.

I have 15-20 medium sized moving boxes up for grabs. Most of them are from Uhaul/Home Depot. They are currently all loaded in the back of my car, so I can drop them off if you are close to Davis.

Does anyone know what happened to Amelia's? The windows are papered over and there is construction work going on.

A leaflet that I picked up at today's Route 16 SomerStreets festival says that the next one will be Sunday, September 8, noon to 4 pm, on Holland Street between Davis and Teele Squares.

The name of the event is Strike Up The Bands (Music and Motion). I do not know anything more about it. If you do, please add a comment here.

It looks like it's down to Tufts and The "National Drug Store Chain" (reportedly CVS) with 35 residential units.

The brand-new Stop & Shop at Broadway and Route 16 (formerly Johnnie's Foodmaster) has its grand opening tomorrow at 10 am.
According to an announcement from Stop & Shop, the store will be celebrating its opening all weekend with prize giveaways and children's activities.

Friday through Sunday, customers who buy Stop & Shop- and Nature's Promise-brand food could win a $10 gift card, the announcement says. It says the store will be giving out $1,000 worth of cards.

Also over the weekend, Sally the Clown will be on hand to make balloon animals and conduct puppet shows for kids. Sally will be there Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., the announcement says.

I wrote to the company and asked when it would be finished.  Their reply:

We do not have a firm opening date at this time, however, we hope to open the store this summer. As you may know, many unforeseen events can affect the completion of a new store. We hope to serve you soon at the new location.

Just wanted to share that Stop & Shop has now put up signs at the old Foodmaster location at Rt. 16 and Broadway, stating that the new store is "Coming Soon!". Also, as an update to the previous post about this store, S&S has reached an agreement with their workers' union without any strikes.

I emailed them to ask if they have a timeline for when this store will open, but they haven't emailed me back yet. I'll update this post once they do!

Update: Their email said "We do not have a firm opening date at this time, however, we hope to open the store before the end of the year. As you may know, many unforeseen events can affect the completion of a new store. We hope to serve you soon at the new location."

So there I was, walking down Malvern Ave. on the way to Yorktown to pick up something from a friendly FreeCycler, when from between two houses popped a very large and very angry-looking wild turkey! He was only about 7-8 ft. away from me, and due to the houses being built up from the street, he was pretty much at eye level to boot. Needless to say, I stopped dead in my tracks as he hopped down to the sidewalk, stalked across the street to someone else's driveway, and paced around the neighborhood for a while, giving everyone and everything in the area the stinkeye. I went on my way, picked up my item, and on my way back saw him still in the same driveway, looking pissed off, before he eventually headed up the street in the direction from whence I'd just come. I spoke w/a couple of people who were coming out of their house while he was still in the driveway, and they said "Oh, he's been here for several years," which, considering that coyotes have been spotted in the 'Ville (or at least in my part of it; I remember hearing about a sighting on Lexington Ave.), surprises me; then again, the turkey in question gives off sufficient "don't f&$! with me!" vibes that I can see how he's been left unmolested all this time.

EDIT: I just looked through the "local wildlife" tag, and saw that plenty of turkeys have been seen around and about the area, but this was my first up close and personal encounter with one, and I can definitely see why you wouldn't want to be on their bad side...
