Creative Economy Survey
The Somerville Arts Council is conducting a survey on the city's creative community and they could use your help. They're even sweetening the deal - complete the survey and you'll be entered to win one of four $50 Amazon gift cards. From the Somerville Arts Council: Much of our success at the Somerville Arts Council is contingent on our listening to the creative community in Somerville. Our programming seeks to reflect the rich cultural diversity of the City and the artists, designers, and performers who have made it home. Similarly the policies we push at the City level attempt to be responsive to the needs of local artists. As Somerville approaches a crossroads in terms of the type of change and development it expects, we need to develop surveys and reports to understand the needs of the creative community and identify points of leverage for policy intervention. Toward that goal, we are launching an asset survey and analysis with UMass Center for Policy Analysis. Although there is no clear definition of the creative economy, it essentially encompasses those businesses, organizations, and individuals who produce and distribute cultural goods, services, and intellectual property - from art, film, photography, and music to architecture, advertising, and jewelry design. Somerville is well-known for attracting and supporting artists; this report will make legible to others in the State how to serve the creative community. While economic impacts are an inherently crude measure of artistic expression, they are an important part of the larger narrative of how creative activity increases cultural and economic well-being. Please take the survey now. It is only 12 questions. All information, whether personal or financial, collected in the survey will be kept in strict confidence before being aggregated for the report. Thanks for your support. |

looking for non-chain local, independent jewelry store
It's physically nothing unique to replace and I expect that there's a catalog of mass-produced rings from which we can very easily identify what my ring was and get a matching one in the same size. When we bought it, we got both rings from Kitty Haas (who in addition to her cool artsy silver stuff used to special-order simple wedding bands in gold and/or platinum) and the rings thus came with a good feeling and a good conversation with Kitty and quite the opposite of the mall stores I really dislike the vibe of.
I know of local jewelery artists like Jade Moran and Daniel Spirer, but what about a basic jewelry store for NON-artsy jewelry? It seems silly to get a handcrafted ring that is copying the simplest-of-simple band that I had and my husband still has.

Two Jewelry Things
2) Does anyone remember Kitty Haas, the wonderful jeweler in Porter Exchange? The store is gone and she seems to have left the business, but does anybody know of a similar jeweler somewhere in the area, specifically one that deals in semi-precious stones rather than the diamond-y stuff? Kitty would have had just what I'm looking for. Any other local jewelers or jewelry makers filling the semi-precious niche these days?

Best place to sell old jewelry?
Does anyone have recommendations for the best places to go to deal with such things? If specifics are relevant, the band has a braid pattern and the other ring has what appear to be two small diamond chips flanking a purple gem (amethyst maybe?). I haven't the slightest idea what the value might be.
(PS: If anyone else wants to donate their ex's jewelry, you are most welcome to, though direct credit card contributions on the web site are much easier. :)

Getting rid of stuff
Somehow, I managed to become the person all the older women unload their costume jewelery onto. I'm not sure how that happened, but I ended up with a ton of this stuff, most of which deserves a better home than mine.
I've listed prices, but best offer wins.
So, without further ado, here it all is!
( Dial up users, beware! )
There's more, but this is the best of it.

D² on Highland Ave
I bought some amazing jewelry, a Davis Square shirt, a box of almond soaps, a "Lucky Pennies" sign for my back entry and a few other things.
Just like any new business, it takes time to work out the kinks, house a good inventory and find a balance of creating the vision that is in harmony and compatible with the neighborhood and the market. And so far, they're doing a great job. I'm looking forward to popping in on a regular basis. They are friendly and helpful, and I'm going back!
And even if you're not in the market for buying something, you have to check out the switch plate on the wall to the left as you come in the door. It's the coolest copper design. It's official, I'm in love.

Jewelry Repair?
Any good, inexpensive place in Davis (or red line) to get delicate box chains (silver, gold) repaired?
Don't know how I keep breaking them...
