WBZ radio had a report this morning that restaurants in Lexington are closed due to the water emergency, so I called to see if the place I'd chosen for brunch in Somerville was open. As long as I had the phone warmed up, I decided to check a few other places. Seems like it is not effecting places here.

Here's the scoop:

Alfresco - open
Broken Yoke - open
Gargolyes - answering machine (with a Valentine's Day message...) in theory, 10:30 am open
Johnny D's - open
Kelly's - open
Renee's - recording says they're open, but it sounds like their usual message so can't be sure
Supreme Kitchen - Open
Thirsty Scholar - answering machine - in theory, open at 11 am
True Grounds - open (said "we may close early, not serving any cold, non-bottled beverages")

The Neighborhood in Union Square - OPEN
The Independent - answering machine, in theory opens at 11 am

Anyone know of other places that are open? or closed?

I saw that report on Lexington restaurants and laughed because we ate at Martsa on Elm last night who happily reassured us that they were doing all the extra boiling of water necessary. Somerville restauranteurs are more hardcore than Lexington! :)

Also, everything in Cambridge should be unaffected as the water in Cambridge is fine

tangential gripe: "affecting". (sorry, that one grates on me :( )

Well it's not causing places to come into being here, either.

Also to add: no coffee at Diesel, Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, or even McDonald's.

Which boggles my mind, cause don't you have to boil water to make coffee? I mean, I get it, but then again...I don't.

Typical coffee machines don't boil the water for over a minute, as is the current recommendation.

No, ideally the water for coffee should be around 200 degrees F, not 212. Boiling water is bad for the coffee.

I just got an iced coffee at the Dunkin Donuts in Medford on Mystic.

They have their own water. I would not trust any restaurant to actually follow proper procedures in this situation. People tend to cut corners when things get complicated.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw that Sound Bites is open.

True Grounds served me some iced coffee this morning that they had made yesterday (alas, iced coffee does not really like sitting that long, but we get our caffeine where we can in these dire times, eh). They were also serving hot tea, since you have to boil that anyway. They were definitely not serving other coffee drinks (including, alas, espresso drinks). But they were doing a good business of bottled drinks and baked goods (mmm, scones).

This afternoon, the Davis Square Starbucks was open to sell food, prepackaged drinks and "Via Lattes": Via instant coffee powder mixed into refrigerated milk, served cold, no ice.

This afternoon, Dunkin Donuts in Davis Square was closed. Diesel and Starbucks were open but not serving any form of coffee, either hot or iced. The new Aroma Cafe, on Highland Ave just beyond Cedar St, did have coffee.

Of course, do you really want to eat in a restaurant and trust that they are really boiling all the water, washing their hands in boiled water, and washing the dishes in boiled water? Not me - to Cambridge I go.
