I need to get an eye exam and also a prescription for contact lenses (I wore them years ago but haven't recently). I've gone through the 'eye care' tag, and saw a lot of mixed or negative recommendations. Any strong positive reviews? I'm not considering Parelli because of the number of negative reviews associated with them and contact lenses.

I am pretty fond of parelli, but it sounds like you decided on that front.

I liked my visit with Dr. Murphy near Central Square. I wear contacts.

Damn, well, I see what you said however I feel that I must speak in defense of Parrelli Optical and specifically Jonathan Parrelli. After a terrible experience with the contact lens service at Mass. Eye and Ear that not only left me with lenses I couldn't wear but also more-or-less permanent damage to my eye, Jonathan was able to fit my extremely astigmatic eyes with rigid gas permeable lenses that actually both work extremely well (I see two lines better on the eye chart with them than with the best prescription possible for glasses) and also fit properly. Particularly if you're astigmatic or have other unusual problems and you want or feel you may want rigid lenses, he's the man to see.

No affiliation, just a very satisfied customer. And I recommend that you avoid the contact lens service at Mass. Eye and Ear - although actual doctors I have dealt with over there are pretty great.

I don't wear contacts but for my eye exam, I loved Dr. Duane Smith at Lenscrafters in the Galleria

Ditto! Oh, wait, I accepted the substitute the last time I went there - his associate, a woman, sorry I don't remember her name. She was great too.

Affiliated with the Wellington Circle Lenscrafters, but exam practice is separate.

My family has used his practice for years, both for glasses and contacts.

Reliable, pleasant, professional.

Yes, the Tom Champion Seal of Approval is worth every pixel it's printed with . . . or on . . . or whatever they do with pixels.

Seriously, when it comes to optometrics, I'm just another middle-aged myopic looking for (and finding!) bifocal contacts. Unlike me, my opinion doesn't carry any extra weight.

But I guess the point is moot, since it's not easy for you to get to the wilds of Mehfuh.

Seconded for Dr. Murphy at Custom Eyes in Central Sq - she's reserved and professional, but she's also happy to explain the science and practicalities of contact lenses. If you do need glasses, the optician (Kevork) is also very nice - he treats everyone like a friend and has an excellent eye for style, but he is also patient and doesn't scorn when someone spends five hours deciding on frames (*cough*).

I have had great experiences with Cheryl Jost at Parrelli and would strongly recommend her (but I don't wear contacts anymore so can't speak to that part).

If you have medical insurance that covers such things, i would strongly recommend Dr. Nayiri Ajoian (Harvard Vanguard's Davis Sq. office). She is thorough, professional, and patient in doing those last few tiny adjustments that make such a difference in my glasses.

I've been happy with the doctor I've seen the past couple years at Harvard Vanguard, David Conway. I'm primarily a contacts-wearer, and I'm glad I finally gave in to his advice to get lenses to correct for astigmatism.

I've seen Dr. Conway at Harvard Vanguard for years, and would recommend him for anyone who wears contacts.

Thirded! Before I stared into the big scary lasers a couple years back, I always went to Dr Conway for glasses and contacts.

Dr. Lawrence Phillips (http://www.lawrencephillips.com/) of Brattle Square Optical is Dr. Contact Lens, according to other people I know who wear them--I've only seen him for glasses because I hate touching my eyeball, but I have had very good experiences with him.

Looks like I'm late and there are already a bunch good options here, but I'll throw in a plug for my doctor, Karen Lewis at Central Square Eye Care in case someone comes through the memories.

I can't recommend for anything too fancy, as I've only had routine yearly exams and prescription updates, but I like her enough that I followed her to Central Square when she moved to this new practice. Which really means something in my case because I tend not to be too picky about my doctors (is that weird?), and in other cases (PCP, dentist, etc) have have always just stuck with the practice when my doctor leaves and taken whichever new doctor I'm reassigned to.

(There's another doctor there as well, but I have never seen him, so no opinion either way.)
