air planes

I know this is a controversial subject, but whatever.  So I was out for what I was hoping would be a nice summer night walk to Davis, and all I hear for the entire walk are extremely loud and low flying air planes.  Logan is sending every plane over our neighborhoods today...a new plane every 30 seconds.  So loud that you have to pause your conversation.  I was able to capture one on my phone cam, so nobody can deny it this time.

Anyways, I remember there being a lawsuit a few years back.  Something about the city of Somerville suing Massport for illegally overusing the new runway against what they communicated before creating the new runway.  Years have passed and nothing has happened with that, as far as I know.  Is there any hope in putting an end to this, or at least reducing it a bit?  It wasn't ever this bad 4+ years ago.  Just looking for more info, as the mayor's office doesn't seem to respond to emails about this.

I agree, it's been especially bad today. I saw one even lower than that right over the bike path.

I'm sure that if you go back through every post on this topic, you'll find at least two mentions of the lawsuit along with links provided in the comments.

I know I've seen them in each of these, but I'm not going to do your work for you.

Interestingly the logan noise link from a December post doesn't seem to work anymore.

It will be resolved when they start flying airplanes over people who can't afford lawyers.

I wish you luck in advance dealing with the usual level of obnoxious comments calling you a cry baby sarcastically or whatever static you will come across. Try to ignore them. I find it best.

In the future, just call Logan ahead of time and let them know that you've got plans for a nice summer night walk. They'll hold all flights until you're done. Just be sure to call back when your walk is over.

(I was delayed on a flight to Florida last year because someone forgot to let Logan know that they had decided to take in a late movie, instead of sitting in the calm, serenity of silence that is Davis Square)

Send your complaints to ResiStat (http://www.somervilleresistat.org/Airplane_Noise_Data.html), which does collect them.

Also, the Massport Noise Abatement Airport Monitor (https://www.massport.com/environment/environmental_reporting/Noise%20Abatement/AirportMonitor.aspx) webpage has a complaint form.

Or call the Massport Noise complaint line directly, I have called them @ midnight and as late (or early) as 3am to complain as I can't sleep b/c of the noise. Sometimes the person on the other end is sympathetic, but truthfully I don't think the complaint department does anything but take the call, then it just goes into the ether..

movie documentation was not necessary. No one denies that planes fly over Somerville. It's just that they fly over wherever the weather tells them they have to fly over. (Because of
wind direction, not storms in this case), and they've got to fly somewhere...

But I'll let Dan cover the snark...

i...i don't think anyone thinks people are making up the idea that planes fly over davis. it's just that things like noise are relative to the individual and where they live.

for example, i grew up in RI and our house was about five minutes from the airport, so i hardly even notice it anymore. in fact, it was a bit eerie and took a little getting used to not having that noise. (not that i liked it particularly, but you get used to sounds of things.)

I was 20 minutes from the TF Green and I still heard them. You pretty much hear them everywhere in RI, but everybody I know who lives in Warwick just accepts it.

Oh no, someone is complaining about quality of life issues! Don't you know that you don't have any right to do that because improving your quality of life might be (a) hurting someone else's; (b) make Somerville less hip and edgy; (c) cripple the entire economy because someone's plane might be late; or (d) provide opportunities for other people to snark.

Seriously, there's nothing wrong with complaining about airplane noise. It's how things work. If residents of some other neighborhood or city don't make FREE phone calls to complain about airplane noise over their neighborhood that's their problem. Massport's job is to make sure their external impacts are minimized. They don't know that people mind unless they call in, or sue, or make their displeasure known some other way.

Yes, there is something wrong about it, because we have firmly established what to do, where to go, and who to speak to. This issue is settled. It has been settled effectively, in detail, and repeatedly. Posting about it is now nothing more than coming in here to get in the crybaby corner, or, as the OP is obviously trying to do, pick a fight.

This + 100.

Maybe someone should start a davis_square_airplane_noise community. These posts are getting frequent (and annoying) enough to warrant one.

So you can neither call the city nor use Google?

You're a sockpuppet picking a fight. There is no validity to this. You just want to whine. Take it to your personal journal.

Perhaps Massport should consider requiring the steep takeoffs and landings that are characteristic of John Wayne airport in Orange County, California. These procedures exist because of noise problems in the neighborhoods surrounding that airport.

Ron, these take offs are actually dangerous, burn more fuel and are highly frightening for many passengers. It's also why that airport is ranked as one of the world's worst to fly out of. Unless there is a direct correlation to overall public health (and I don't mean anxiety or annoyance) that would make a strong case for forcing this sort of thing, it's not worth it.

ETA: Also, it's actually noisier over the immediate neighborhood, just for a smaller period of time. To do this, you're pulling up at full throttle.

While agree that the flowchart will be in order... the original poster has a question to which I'd actually like to know the answer.

What happened with the lawsuit?

I'll add another: where can I find either the current status of the lawsuit, or the results?

Usually I ignore these posts, but this is the first time I've honestly been bothered by the airplanes. It wasn't horrible, but there were a couple that were pretty damn low.

Google "somerville logan lawsuit runway," click "I'm Feeling Lucky", and you'll find that the "Case against FAA withdrawn and state court found Massport was meeting requirements of court order (2009)" on page 10.
What did the Mayor's office say when you called?
