Hi All,

I like walking on a outdoor track, a year or two back I'd go to Dilboy stadium track but they no longer have hours for Somerville residents. Does anyone know of safe, localish(have car), well lit outdoor track where people can walk in the evenings? Tufts? Highschool?

Thanks

Does Dilboy now have hours only for residents of other cities? (If so, why?)

Danehy Park in Cambridge looks promising, and is a short walk from Davis Square: http://goo.gl/maps/Sq5I

Any idea why they stopped? (One of us should call them and ask.)

Besides the oval track, Danehy also has plenty of well-lit paved walkways for general strolling.

Unfortunately, they are redoing the football field there right now, and have the whole thing torn up and fenced in. The track is still there, but has as a huge ramp set up on part of it, and they clearly don't want anyone using it right now. Too bad, because I often use it for speed workouts in the mornings. I have used Tufts track in the past, as well....

The Tufts track is great. It's right on College Ave right after the rotary.

I've used it before to go running, and there were others using it too who looked more like locals than students.

No issue whatsoever. People are on the track all day and they encourage it.

I can confirm that the Tufts track is open to the public. There are no Tufts track practices in the summer either, though some of the local running clubs hold their track workouts there in the evenings.

I think every time I've used the Tufts track, it's been locals...and I like it there quite a bit. Although it could use more trees but I am a shade baby!

I agree, it has a distinct lack of shade....

I talked to someone in community relations at Tufts once, and she said that it was fine for the public to use their track as long as Tufts people weren't using it. She also explained the complicated parking rules--which I forget. (However, if you are a Somerville resident, you can just park on College Avenue, and avoid the lot.)

From what I've seen at Tufts, as long as you don't park in the lots during the standard school day or overnight, you'll be fine.

And the rules for using the outdoor tennis courts/basketball court appear to be the same...help yourself as long as there's nothing official going on.

I believe the tennis courts are closed this summer for resurfacing.

The main courts are; there are a couple of other courts by the football field that I believe are still open.
