I am looking for work over the winter, while my bike school is on break. I do baby sitting, elder care, sewing, errands, transcribing, editing, tutoring, and cooking. I'd love to have a few steady jobs over the winter but could also do odd jobs that come along. I have a teaching certificate, first aid and CPR and play the guitar and sing. Tailor?

Hi Friends,

I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with my tailor and am looking for a new one. Being 4'11" tall, I do need this service frequently (as does my Dad, although, he's not as little as me). Is there someone that you recommend? I'd like to stay local, but will travel for talent.

Eleni of New York, the tailor next door to Diesel Cafe, has closed. The sign is gone and the windows are papered over.

I don't recall seeing any advance notice of the closing, so I hope lots of people don't have clothes locked in there.

Just got my maid of honor dress for a friend's wedding in September, and rather than give another red cent to the David's Bridal Wedding Industrial Complex, I'm looking for an amazing local seamstress/tailor to do some alterations. Have car, able to travel.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I just walked over there to drop off some pants to be mended, but her shop was closed and dark with no sign outside. During the few minutes I was there, at least 3 other people visited in hopes of picking up clothing they had dropped off earlier. One of them told me he'd been trying for a week, but had not found the shop open.

Anyone know more?
(This is the tailor shop next door to Diesel)

ETA 2/20: Never mind, she was open as usual today.

A favorite sweater of mine has a hole in it. Do you know of someone near Davis Square (or nearby) who can darn sweaters?

I have a women's pantsuit that needs to be hemmed and fitted. Does anyone know a good tailor in the area?

I'm looking for someone to sew some buttons and pockets on heavy suede winter coats. Doing it myself has led to failure. I also need someone to try to recondition some leather coats.

Ideas?

Does anyone have recommendations for folks in the area who sew at reasonable prices? I have a dress that has a tear in the side and I need someone who can sew it shut. The dress was only a few dollars, so I'd prefer not to take it somewhere expensive. If I were handy I could do this myself, but I am blessed with the gift of clumsiness. :)

Thanks and Happy New Year!!

I have a leather bag with a grommet design on the strap: (Picture here).

One of the grommets popped out a couple of years ago and I never got around to getting it fixed. It seems to have a 3/8" diameter on the inside and 1/2" diameter from edge to edge. I brought it last week to Jimmy's Shoe Repair in Central but they told me that they didn't have anything that size.

It also seems like it could/should be something that I could fix myself, but the internet only wants to sell grommets to me in 100+ batches. That's an option, I guess, because if I lost one I probably will lose more.

That does, however, seem like a pretty drastic step if only because I am hopeless at all things DIY. Is there anywhere locally that might be able to fix this?

Thank you!

The zipper ripped off my sofa slipcover in the wash, and I would like to get it repaired. I called tailors like Jack's and Eleni of New York, but both said they don't do that kind of work. Any suggesstions?

hi,

i am looking for an **amazing seamstress** to work on a few projects for me: 1) some relatively simple shirts; and, 2) a skirt with big pockets. i am looking for someone who is able to create patterns and sew well-made clothing.  i am NOT looking for someone who simply does alterations.  i live in davis square but am able to travel to surrounding areas (e.g. boston, etc).

thanks in advance!

I'm hacking together an X-Men flight suit costume for upcoming events and realized that my costume hacking skills aren't what they could be. Is their an experienced costume / cosplay maker in the Davis Square area who I can contract with to make this a reality?

Can someone recommend a local tailor? I took my favorite skirt to Dudley Dry Cleaners on Mass. Ave. for hemming. Now I need a good tailor to repair the damage.

Davis Square, Porter Square, or Harvard Square (or anywhere on the Red Line) are all convenient. Thanks!

I need some thermal curtains, and they have to be short.  I haven't been able to find any online or in stores that are not full length designed to essentally drape all the way from the top of the window to the floor or close to it.  So I guess I need to buy some thermal curtains and have someone cut and sew the bottoms.

Any recomendations?  I guess I should be looking at dry cleaner businesses?

Or I might learn how to sew...

I am looking for someone who would be able to create a jacket for me based on a jacket I already have. Does this service exist locally? Recommendations please! I already checked the clothing tag, nothing jumped out. Thanks!

I need to have a bridesmaid dress hemmed, and I'd love to hear some recommendations. My two requirements:
1. Must be good with formal dresses. This is a satin dress with an organza panel, so a messy hem will be obvious.
2. Must be reliable on time. I have a month, which I assume will be plenty of time. But it's an out-of-town wedding, so if the ETA is cutting it close, I won't have any "I need an extra day" kind of wiggle room! Can't just pick up morning-of! Etc.

I promise I'm not a difficult customer, I'm just paranoid. :) It was a bit of a fiasco getting this dress in the first place, so if anything goes wrong I don't believe I'll be able to get a replacement.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I haven't had to have a formal dress altered since I moved to the Boston area, so I have NO personal experience and searching for a list of local seamstresses is just daunting and so uncertain.

Edit: Thanks for all the input! I think I'm going to give Jack and Elegant a call today to start, since they're so close, and go from there.

Hello Davis Square, are there good recommendations for tailoring in Davis or Ball Square?

Thanks again in advance.

I just bought a totally frivolous but cute car seat cover for my soon-to-arrive little one. Last night I washed it on delicate and air dried it, being in crazy nesting mode as I am. This morning I realized that one of the seams had ripped open in the wash (about a 4 inch gap), exposing the stuffing. I do NOT want to repair it myself. I mean, I could sew it by hand, using my eighth grade home-ec skills, but that would be just ugly, and the whole purpose of this cover is to be cute.

So, where can I bring it for this kind or repair and what should I expect to pay? I'm really hoping not much. Or is there any seamstress/"seamster" on here who'd like to take it on for a small fee? It's probably honestly a 10-15 minute job if you know what you're doing.
