Poutine

A freezing day like this reminds me to share my recent discovery that poutine has been added to the menu at Eat At Jumbo's in Ball Square. Comfort soaked in gravy.

The owner told me (when I asked) that he unfortunately doesn't have local access to authentic cheese curds (the ones from Trader Joe's suck). But he substitutes what he described to me as "Vermont cabot," whatever that may be, and the flavor and consistency is similar to what I've had in Montreal. Gooey. Greasy. Glorious.

I've ordered it a few times lately. It's certainly not the world's best poutine, but it does show up at your doorstep and it satisfies that craving pretty darned well.

(World's best (that I've eaten) probably goes to Duckfat in Portland, ME)

mmm,sweeet.

yeah, unpasteurized curds are illegal in MA. the pasteurized are good, but not the same. i mail order pasteurized ones in from NY state to satiate the craving.

The owner's a nice guy. That place seems to be doing well, and I'm glad, especially since Wings Over seems to have gone straight to hell.

Unfortunately I would not say that they are the quickest food in the world. I usually go to On the Broadway now, since they can usually crank out an equivalent meal in half the time of Jumbo's. This might improve as the logistics get firmly worked out though.

I need to check this out since I too have had Montreal poutine. I'm assuming that the gravy is not vegetarian?

nom nom nom.

unfortunately (for me) I don't eat meat, so I have to make my own poutine or do without. I know some folks who need to hear about this though.

"Cabot" is a brand of cheese from Vermont, and I think it's the best cheese to be found in New England.

Try their Extra Sharp Cheddar some time, most grocery stores carry it.

Negative, that would be Shelburne Farms, about 40 miles away in Shelburne, VT (on the lake!)

And that's a fact. ;-)

I used to like the Cabot Extra Sharp and Seriously Sharp... Then I tried their Special Reserve Cheddar. It blows the others out of the milking shed. BJs sells the Special Reserve, but you can probably find it other places.

It looks like the online ordering doesn't have your full menu on it - I don't see any pizza or the poutine (which I'm now very curious to try). Any chance that'll be fixed sooner or later?

Hi Grover,

It's funny that Poutine should come up. I was also excited to see it on your menu and ordered it via Campus Food on 12/11/09. I ordered it at 10:15, the confirmation arrived at 10:22 and the food did not show up until 11:50 and was stone cold.

I did not complain because I figured why bother, but since you are posting here I thought I'd let you know what happened. Could Poutine makes me sad :-(

FYI, All-Star Sandwich Bar in Inman Square also features Poutine. (Yes, technically on the Cambridge side of the line, but only by a block or two.)

All Star's "poutine" doesn't even have cheddar cheese, it has herbs, and the fries are too thin. I'll give them credit for the free oreos and the delicious sandwiches though.

As any true Davis Square foodie could tell you, the best way to get the best poutine is to hop on 93 north to 89 north, continue on past the border on Rte. 133, and stop at Chez Tipolo in Saint-Pierre-de-Véronne-à-Pike-River.

Just sayin'.
