I realize I could have seen this coming.   An experiment in aerial photography gone wrong.

My phone is now floating somewhere in the Ball Square / Davis Square area.   It went up an hour ago and there's not much wind -- I expect it will come down somewhere in Somerville before the end of the day.    If you happen to find it, please get in touch!

My email's katie.gradowski [at] gmail.com, or you can email partsandcrafts [at] gmail.com -- I'll leave it enabled until the end of the day on the off chance that someone finds it and tries to return it.   You'll recognize it by the giant mylar balloon attached, or the sticker on the back that says "Katie"

Thanks!

I... I... well then.

It probably should be noted that mylar balloons can last a week or more if not popped. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will get stuck under a porch roof or something. But I'm thinking this is more likely to end up in the "cautionary tales" logbooks.

Well, this is Davis/Tufts we're talking about. So if any friendly SCAdians see a mylar balloon with a cell phone attached...get your archery kit and do the poor woman a favor?

That was purely tongue in cheek, I assure you.

...then again, considering some of the SCAdians I've known, perhaps I should have been clearer. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. DO NOT RUIN ANACHRONISM FOR THE REST OF US.

I left my interest for archery at Pennsic, and no one will let me have any javelins.

...

I don't know why.

Maybe your phone will capture the surprised expression of the person who finds a cell phone attached to a balloon.

The squirrels and pigeons will be making lots of free long distance calls later.

What kind of phone was it? There are some good smartphone apps you can use to track/find a lost phone, some that you can even install after you've already lost the phone. Like this guy's story (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/08/how-plan-b-found-the-droid-i-was-looking-for.ars).

I hope you find your phone. Also, this experiment sounds awesome, except for the "oh crap, I've lost my phone" bit.

Ring it?

You could always try using http://www.wheresmycellphone.com/ to make it ring...

Actually, since it's floating anyway, she should just set up an automated script and make it ring constantly. If you can't find your phone, you might as well screw with people.

I APPROVE OF THIS PLAN. Even though it would probably convince me I was going crazy.

Oh no, Katie! (I know you from P&C). Was this part of a camp activity? Were the kids amused?

Just looked north from the 25th floor of the Hancock. Not seeing any glints. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Things like this, BTW, is why I read the DSLJ.

Is it an Android phone? If so you can try installing FindMyPhone and tracking it that way: http://help.seekdroid.com/kb/setup-installation/never-setup-seekdroid-and-lost-device

There are probably similar apps for other smartphones.

Good luck!

I hope you find it, and if you do any clever ideas I hope your phone has enough charge to implement them.

I also hope you'll update us...

Any update?

Somerville Patch ran an article last week saying that the 'balloon' is actually a "mylar sleeping bag filled with helium, sealed with duct tape and rubber bands", and that the camp counselor "in an attempt to tether the balloon, accidentally let go of the end and let it go floating skyward."
