Looking to have a little fun with the epic snow we've gotten this year, we're running a contest on the Somerville Beat to guess when this giant pile will melt. The winner will get a $25 Union Square Donuts gift card, Beat stickers and, best of all, bragging rights! Enter by March 1 at midnight. Good luck!

Blessed be the shovelers, those of tired backs and aching arms, for through the sweat of their brows, we may walk.
Blessed be the snow blowers, though their machines are noisy, because you can fit a stroller through those suckers.
Blessed be the plow drivers, though you have just plowed in the end of my driveway *again*, because we know you working hard this month.
Blessed be the fit young firemen who are digging out every one of this city's hydrants.
Blessed be the neighbors who shovel and snowblow for their neighbors who cannot, because we're not all as able as we used to be.
Blessed be Mayor Joe Curtatone and Jackie Rossetti from the City of Somerville, though they both sound kinda tired, for they are holding the city together.
Blessed be Dr. Scott, who made the hard call to put safety over political expedience, though it meant my husband had to walk three miles to work this morning, because walking is still better than a derailment.
Blessed be the bus drivers, though they may splash me with slush, because they will wait long enough for a young mother and toddler to climb over snow berms to get on board.
Finally, blessed be the folks at 'Bucks and Dunks, dispensers of coffee and cocoa, because we couldn't get through this without them.

I thought we could all use something upbeat this week!

If you're a member of the Planet Fitness in Porter Square, or if you were considering joining, you might want to take a look at this:

http://www.universalhub.com/2013/planet-fitness-takes-away-nitpickers-annoyance

The entity that owned the Porter Square/Government Center Planet Fitness franchise has left Planet Fitness and rebranded the two gyms to "Rock'n Fitness." They apparently did not notify customers of this until December 28 and are simply transferring the accounts to their own gym using a payment processor considered unsavory by some (ABC Financial). There is currently no website, social media presence, or any other information available about "Rock'n Fitness" outside of the uhub thread.

If you are a member of one of these two gyms, you will no longer be able to use other Planet Fitness locations as you are no longer a Planet Fitness member.

There are many complaints in the uhub comment thread, and someone who claims to be affiliated with "Rock'n Fitness" has been responding to many of them with insults (apparently they want to be the Amy's Baking Company of gyms).

My creative energy has been just about zero lately, thanks to a very busy schedule at work. But I'll say this for JonMon: His Lawsuit of Mass Destruction has inspired me. My wife, [livejournal.com profile] firstfrost, has received a threat letter, but she is not yet named in the LMD. I'm proud of everything she has said about JonMon. I didn't need JonMon's validation to be proud of her, but data is data.

I haven't been named or threatened in the LMD (yet), and I don't mean to make light of the anxiety that it has caused in our community. In particular, if you have taken something down or remained silent thanks to JonMon's toolbox of intimidation, I want you to know that I think no less of you for it. Every situation is unique, and we all have our limits of what we can deal with right this minute. My limit is high right now, so I'm standing up.

Likewise, I respect the opinions of those who have counseled caution or outright silence. I disagree with some of your key points, and I feel that some of your arguments apply better to people who are more concerned with anonymity than I am, or who cannot afford to risk an extended legal fight. The bottom line for me is this: One of the basic functions of any community is to sound a warning when a predator is around. If we're not sure the law can handle that, then it's time to get out and push.

This song is about JonMon's Lawsuit of Mass Destruction, and it is sung to the tune of "Charlie on the M.T.A." Permission is hereby granted to $verb this song, for all values of $verb, for every human being on planet Earth with the exception of Jonathan Graves Monsarrat. No permission of any kind is willingly granted to Mr. Monsarrat. In case he hadn't noticed, that's what happens when you are in the habit of excreting on your community.

Let me tell you the story of a man named JonMon... )

Edit: For anyone who's keeping track, I received my very own letter this morning, at my work address, addressed to me using a middle initial which I don't use socially but which appears on official records.

The letter arrived several hours after I'd written a parody referencing myself as one of the people affected by the threatened lawsuit. Admittedly, I did post a single comment on one of the contested posts. However, I'd much prefer to think either that I'm psychic or that there's a blue police box in my future.

Further edit: My mother received a copy of the letter, addressed to me, at her home address (where I was once, briefly registered to vote while I was between apartment leases in two other cities). She is very upset. To avoid any further risk of involving my family in this mess, I've removed the potentially objectionable content.

There've been many songs written about the eternal triangle. This one tells the story of a Mr Jonmon, a LiveJournal community and a moderatin' man named Ron Newman. When the sun rises tomorrow, Ron Newman... will be served.
Hang down your head, Ron Newman
Hang down your head and brood
Hang down your head, Ron Newman
Oh boy, we've all been sued.
We read it on the LJ
This Jonmon had been bad
Read it on the LJ
And there we laughed like mad.
Hang down your head, Ron Newman
Hang down your head and brood
Hang down your head, Ron Newman
Who knew this was a feud?
We forgot about it all, then
We let three whole years pass
We got on with our lives, then
We're put on by this ass.
Hang down your head, Ron Newman
The one who was least rude
Hang down your head, Ron Newman
Yet he thinks you're the dude.
Trouble, oh there's trouble
For all Does, Jane and John
He sent us all nice letters
Some found him on their lawn.
Hang down your head, Ron Newman
Hang down your head subdued
Hang down your head, Ron Newman
Oh boy, we've all been sued.
This time tomorrow
Reckon where we'll be
Prob'ly banding together
As one weird family.
Keep your head up, Ron Newman
Keep your head up this time
Keep your head up, Ron Newman
Jonmon won't see a dime.

Just got a super-professional letter telling me that I could remove my posts about our very favorite Davis Squarean and avoid the wrath of his mega-lawsuit. Otherwise, he's going to tell people who I am, so scary.

Dude, you presumably found out who I was from the entry in my LiveJournal where I give my full legal name; why do you think that outing me is some big threat?

Thanks to Ron Bargoot in the Facebook group "Somerville: The Good Old Days", David Misch's early-1970s song "Somerville" is now a YouTube music video. Enjoy!

The Facebook discussion of this video is here.

I love suspense, and you've all waited patiently, albeit with bated breath, for an update . . .

This all started a few days back. I was walking home from something I can't remember what in Davis Square when I suddenly noticed that there were posters stapled to nearly every tree (and pole) in my immediate neighborhood. Literally, virtually every tree had a poster stapled to it, if not two! It was insane.

They were all for a start-up (using that term very loosely as I work in the start-up arena and would never consider doing something so stupid as this) call Scoop 'N' Scoot Ice Cream that offers a speedy ice cream delivery service, apparently to any or all posters in the area. Well, as they offered an 'Order by Text/Call' service, I immediately sent them a text of what I thought of their redecoration of my beautiful neighborhood . . . and this is what transpired.

Note: I'm not complaining.

However, I haven't seen anything here about new rules regarding people with clipboards in Davis. Have rules changed? Is that why there are no longer people accosting me trying to get me to save the whales, or poor people in Uganda, or Alabama, or vote for someone when I just want to get some coffee?

The above quote is from a parole officer, testifying about an Obama bumper sticker on an alleged murderer's car.

The bumper sticker helped link the defendant and his car to the crime, which is a Good Thing. But I don't get the parole officer's logic at all. How many Somerville people do you know who didn't support Obama over McCain in 2008?

(From the Herald, via Universal Hub.)

(2008 Somerville presidential election results from Boston.com: Obama 26450, McCain 5197, others 700)

I was just picking up glasses in the shopping mall at Lesley in Porter (yanno, where the Uno's used to be) when the fire alarm went off. I went outside (not that long since we evacuated a building for an earthquake, after all) to my car in the small garage at the back, to find  someone in a U-Haul trying desperately to back out of the low-height portion of the garage. They had hit the water main pipe that feeds the sprinkler system there. I might add also that the U-Haul was directly under a sign that said "7-foot clearance"

Welcome to September, y'all!

to whoever is responsible for the City of Somerville phone tree today: the latest message about downed powerlines is looping the first 30 seconds or so of the message. i don't know how bad the loop is; i hung up after 3 repeats. it may be filling up people's voicemails even now.

i tried calling 311 to report it, and got some woman whose only response was "it's not my job to fix it". so much for last-minute call center replacements...

I realize I could have seen this coming.   An experiment in aerial photography gone wrong.

My phone is now floating somewhere in the Ball Square / Davis Square area.   It went up an hour ago and there's not much wind -- I expect it will come down somewhere in Somerville before the end of the day.    If you happen to find it, please get in touch!

My email's katie.gradowski [at] gmail.com, or you can email partsandcrafts [at] gmail.com -- I'll leave it enabled until the end of the day on the off chance that someone finds it and tries to return it.   You'll recognize it by the giant mylar balloon attached, or the sticker on the back that says "Katie"

Thanks!

Okay, so it isn't necessarily real, but our great city got mentioned in the Onion.

I live alone and I was very happy to know that I'm not alone in my soul crushing loneliness. ;)
