It's come to my attention that it's virtually impossible to find a good cake out there that's not plain or chocolate. Seems like people believe it's all about the filling and not about the cake itself. This is something perpetuated by typical Italian bakeries which are all about the puddings (tiramisu) or fillings (mascarpone).

What I'm really looking for is a German or Eastern European bakery, one that thinks in terms of hazelnut, almond, and nutmeg, allspice, and ginger. Is this simply a lost cause? Does anyone know of any bakeries that sell a cake where the cake itself is more than just a medium for goo?

Yeah, I know what you mean, it always seems to be, "Do you want yellow or chocolate cake, and what flavour frosting do you want on it?" Sometimes you get carrot cake. That's about it. Even the place that got raved about to me, Konditor Meister, doesn't do anything else. (Personally, I was a bit disappointed by their flavourless cream cheese frosting and the too-fruity, not-spicy-enough carrot cake.)

You might be better off making your own.

Try Lyndell's in Ball Square on Broadway. It was run by a German family for years and I belive the receipes were handed down.

Lyndell's cakes are awesome, but it's not because of the cake (which is only so-so) but the incredible icing. Unfortunately, this seems the opposite of what [livejournal.com profile] fanw is looking for.

Maybe see if the Danish Pastry House (in Medford behind Tufts) can hook you up? I don't know if they make custom stuff but what I've had there is darn good eating, and not always the usual fare.

I'm not sure if the original poster needs a cake soon, but Modern Pastry in Medford Square is currently (at least as of this past Wed. when I walked by) closed for renovations and has been for the past month. Hopefully, they'll be reopening soon!

this might not be exactly what you're looking for, but I worked at the Danish Pastry House in Medford, and damn, they make some fabulous cakes.

They do Sacher tortes, which are German, and they do a lot with marzipan (being Danish and all)...and they love their almonds!

...but they also work with a lot of people individually on what kind of cakes they want.

I will warn you that they are pricey. hands down. however, everything I've ever had there is amazing and very European.

Apparently they do do custom stuff :). And other reasons why it's good to read the whole thread before posting.

OK, now I am totally fantasizing about one of their tall iced mocha glasses and something sweet and a good book....

I don't understand. It's not a matter of opinion. Are you saying that badseed1980's claim is false, and that they do actually have a variety of other kinds of cakes besides basic yellow, chocolate, or carrot?

Konditor Meister rocks

I've had a pumpking-ginger-spice cake from Konditor Meister that was definitely not gold, chocolate or carrot. It's on their website:

http://www.konditormeister.com/christmasmenu.html

On the other hand, it looks like most of their retail section is gold or chocolate cakes with fancy frostings.

Yes, it is false. Check out their website -- they make many other kinds of cake other than the three you just named. They make them and they're delicious. If someone else thinks differently, I'm ok with that.

oh my GOD i love the Danish Pastry House. their cakes are TO DIE FOR. but will also put a nice big dent in your wallet. but oh my god, so worth it.

Rosie's bakery (in porter square, on Mass Ave) has really great cakes, but they tend to be a bit more of the mainstream thing you were talking about. they do have red velvet cakes & other flavors... call & ask. any of the cakes i've gotten from there have been DELICIOUS.

I find Rosie's, which is a chain (other locations include Inman and South Station) to be expensive and unimpressive... not bad, just no better than what I can buy for the same price at Whole Foods. In fact, I recommend either Whole Foods or Trader Joe's gingerbread, if you aren't looking for a fancy cake - an unfinished loaf or bundt.

Sweet Things Bakery (http://www.sweetthings.com/) in Tiburon, CA? :-)
Not terribly useful at the moment, but they do ship...

(I was very amused when [livejournal.com profile] damselfrog told me that her brother B goes up there
sometimes, given that it's down the street from my parent's house.)

Caffe Rossini on Highland Ave (about .5 mile from Davis) has truly excellent cakes. What flavors they have is hit or miss (I adore their lemon cake, myself) but if you want something for a special occasion, they will do custom cakes that are YUMMY and have REAL FLAVOR. Need about 3 days notice to order, if I remember...

I will second Danish Pastry House. I went in looking for what you describe and ended up with a cake-like item that had apples and meringue layers and probably marzipan and I am not sure what else. It was really good and completely NOT yellow/chocolate with your choice of (overly-sweet and cloying) frosting.

Rosie's Bakery in Inman has an *awesome* carrot cake.
We had it as the big layer of our wedding cake.

Rosie's also makes a very good cheesecake, and makes fruit tarts and "seasonal fruit or nut pies". Their list of cakes does include an almond and a hazelnut variation, but no mention of the spicing. While I'm a fan, I'm not sure they're quite what you're looking for.
