It's come to my attention that it's virtually impossible to find a good cake out there that's not plain or chocolate. Seems like people believe it's all about the filling and not about the cake itself. This is something perpetuated by typical Italian bakeries which are all about the puddings (tiramisu) or fillings (mascarpone).

What I'm really looking for is a German or Eastern European bakery, one that thinks in terms of hazelnut, almond, and nutmeg, allspice, and ginger. Is this simply a lost cause? Does anyone know of any bakeries that sell a cake where the cake itself is more than just a medium for goo?

I don't understand. It's not a matter of opinion. Are you saying that badseed1980's claim is false, and that they do actually have a variety of other kinds of cakes besides basic yellow, chocolate, or carrot?

I've had a pumpking-ginger-spice cake from Konditor Meister that was definitely not gold, chocolate or carrot. It's on their website:

On the other hand, it looks like most of their retail section is gold or chocolate cakes with fancy frostings.

Yes, it is false. Check out their website -- they make many other kinds of cake other than the three you just named. They make them and they're delicious. If someone else thinks differently, I'm ok with that.
