So Chris Evans was apparently running a mini-escape room at Comicazi, and none of us noticed the people yelling "Hail Hydra" in the middle of Davis.

He's doing an escape room fundraiser and contest to benefit Christopher's Haven.

Personally, I plan to win, and do an escape room with Captain America.

I am sorry to report that long-time DSLJ participant Stephanie Clarkson, who used the LJ handle [livejournal.com profile] thespian, died this morning (Tuesday, July 19) at Mount Auburn Hospital after a long illness. She was loved by many of us here, and she died much, much too young.

I can't believe nobody has posted about this yet! Our very own [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman was featured in an article about LiveJournal in Scout Somerville. (The author contacted me as well, but I wasn't able to get back to him in time. Which is fine. I think it's well and good that this was Ron's piece.)

Remember that time two years ago when a creepy guy rang my doorbell at 9:30pm on a weeknight hoping to ask me some questions about my solar system?

Well, HEEEEE'S BAAAAACK!

Last night at around 8:40pm, the SAME GUY rang my doorbell, said he noticed the solar panels on my house and wanted to know if we could answer some questions about them. My wife, who answered the door, told him no.  I guess he forgot that we shooed him away two years ago? Or thought that maybe we'd changed our minds?

Again, who does this? And if the stranger in question reads this board: Maybe you should leave a note with your phone number or email address instead? If you don't have any paper with you, well, you know where I live and you could always come back later.

kthxbye.

Hello, [livejournal.com profile] davis_square community. I'm one of your four friendly moderators, posting here to tell you that I had emergency retinal eye surgery (vitrectomy) last Thursday, which involved replacing my left eye's vitreous fluid with a gas bubble.

I have been largely offline every since. For the first four days after surgery, I had to face the ground at all times, whether standing, walking, sitting, or sleeping. This restriction has been lifted, but I still find it very fatiguing to use a computer or read anything for more than a few minutes at a time. So you should not expect to see me much on LJ, Facebook, or anywhere else on the Internet for the next few weeks.

I cannot lift anything heavier than 10 pounds, I not allowed to ride a bicycle or drive a car, and I probably should not walk any substantial distance or take public transit without assistance right now. So I'm feeling a bit socially isolated and would love to have visitors. If you'd like to visit, please call my landline at 617-628-8895, between 9 am and 10 pm, rather than sending e-mails or LJ or Facebook messages.

Some friends of mine have set up the website https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/729457/ to try to coordinate help for me while I recover, such as grocery shopping and laundry.

The Twitterverse is alive with mentions of Malia Obama touring Tufts. Make of it what you will.

Art Apinian, who ran Savas Shoe Repair (in the little plaza between Starbucks and Orange Leaf), died on November 9. He was only 62 years old. I learned of his death today, when [livejournal.com profile] pbockelman posted it to Facebook.

The shop appears to still be open, but I do not know who is now doing the repairs there.

I'll miss him.

Al's daughter, who took over the business when Wendell had management issues, is knowledgeable, is kind, and recognizes which member of the household is less ignorant in the ways of cars. She is also pretty good at talking down panicky car owners who think their spouses ruined the car part that is needing repair, and willing to look for less-expensive-but-still-trustworthy parts for elderly vehicles.

Still four out of five stars, but I never give five stars :)

5Point Film Festival Celebrates Local

SOMERVILLE, MA (October 28, 2014) – Local art, business, athletes, filmmakers, storytellers, and musicians make a community vibrant and diverse, and the 5Point Film Festival is focusing on celebrating this local flavor at their upcoming Festival November 5 + 6 in Somerville.

“The Somerville and Boston areas are rich with a diverse community of artists, businesses and non-profits.” Said Sarah Wood, Executive Director of 5Point Film. “We are celebrating and showcasing this vibrant part of the community at our event and expect to grow this aspect of the event each year.”

Featured local artists include filmmaker Stebs Schinnerer, visual artist Chris DeLorenzo, DJ Gucci Vuitton, and local non-profit Bikes Not Bombs.

About Gucci Vuitton
Gucci Vuitton is a veteran DJ of the Boston scene as well as founder of Bodega and Fourth Wall Project. His diverse sets have been earned him bookings from Boston to Japan and parts in between playing alongside acts like Clipse, Andrew W.K. and Soul Clap. Equally at home in an art gallery or renegade loft party, Gucci Vuitton’s perverse amount of funky records continues keep heads ringing.

About Stebs Schinnerer
Stebs is a filmmaker who focuses on filming beautiful, informative and inspiring films. His goal is to meet and work with as many people as possible, and to create a body of work that does not just reflect one person, place or thing, but encompasses as many sides of life as possible. As an artist collaborating with friends, family, editors, motion graphic artists, creative agencies and generally awesome people, Stebs never feels alone in his journeys. He loves getting to know people and the stories they have to tell – and he loves sharing them with the world. See more at http://paperfortressfilms.com/

These bikes are then sent to international partners in the Global South, or used in local youth programs for skill development, jobs and sustainable transportation. Each year Bikes Not Bombs sends about 3,500 bikes overseas to partners who are using bicycles to drive social change in their communities. Amy Lee Berkowitz, who until a year ago owned and ran Artifaktori at 22 College Avenue, died two weeks ago of breast cancer. She was only 46 years old.

There will be a memorial service at the Cambridge Friends Meeting House on March 1 at 2 pm. More information will be posted soon on Artifaktori's Facebook page.

From the latest New Yorker:

"In late May of this year, a few weeks shy of her fiftieth birthday, my youngest sister, Tiffany, committed suicide. She was living in a room in a beat-up house on the hard side of Somerville, Massachusetts, and had been dead, the coroner guessed, for at least five days before her door was battered down."

Many of the car-enabled in the Davis Square community know Al of ABJ over in Winter Hill. I've been going there to get cars repaired since shortly after coming to Boston. Work has been good and prices reasonable, a rare combination in automotive repair. ABJ will still be there, and it looks like his stamp will stay on the place for many years to come... but.

Al is dying.

Two years ago he was diagnosed with cancer. It started hopscotching around, as some cancers do. Five weeks ago he was admitted to Mass General Hospital. Hopefully he is comfortable. Current medical estimates don't have him lasting out the year. He might not make it past All Hallows Night. If you know Al's full name and want to call MGH, feel free. Don't go over to visit without getting his OK first.

I'm going to miss him.

This has been on the bikepath for a month or so now. Does anyone know who she was?
Thanks!

This obituary was just brought to my attention, from a Raleigh NC newspaper:
Tiffany Joyce Sedaris
Tiffany Joyce Sedaris, 49, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2013, at her home in Somerville, Massachusetts. Tiffany was always full of life and deeply immersed in the arts, including yoga, jazz, gourmet cooking, and mixed-media sculpture. A graduate of the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, she was head pastry chef at the renowned Harvest Restaurant at Harvard Square and the Quebrada Bakery in Arlington, Massachusetts. Tiffany was a talented and accomplished artist, best known for her stained-glass mosaic sculpture, which she exhibited at Somerville'€™s Blue Cloud Gallery and at the annual Somerville Open Studios.

Her studio was open for SOS just a month ago. I wish now that I had visited it.

She had a famous-writer brother who unfortunately wrote about her in less-than-flattering ways, and against her wishes. This Boston Globe article from 2004 discusses some of that: Sister in a glass house.

I don't think I ever met her. Have any of you? Does she have a LiveJournal account here?

two months ago, my mom called me with news about a MYSTERIOUS visitor to her house, in a large black trench coat, blond hair, asking all sorts of questions about me, my whereabouts, et cetera. this haunted me for months afterwards.

SKIP FORWARD TO LAST WEEK, and the news of ron newman being sued by jon monsarrat. the idea struck me; i sent images of jon mon to my mom, and LO AND BEHOLD, it was none other than JON MON who had visited my mom, looking for me.

i'm not exactly sure how he found my address, although it was probably from unprotected whois information on the now defunct texarrakis.

it took me a while to decide whether or not i would share this story publicly, but i figure it is possible it may be helpful to any sort of court case situation. i will say this though; i do not feel as comfortable walking the streets knowing that there is a JONMON out there looking to find me.

WELL THEN. if you come anywhere near me, my friends, or my family again, johnny, i am going to get a proper restraining order.

There is an elderly gentleman often walking around Davis pulling a two wheeled cart whom I assume is homeless. I don't know his situation as I've never approached him for fear of violating his privacy. However I'm now worried about his safety during the storm.

What shelter options exist for the homeless in the Davis area? Does anyone know if this gentleman sleeps out or not? If he does and there are local options I'd like to get him some assistance if I see him today.

Kids, it's that time again....

When we miss the golden tones of Tom Champion. I'll be raising a mug of hot chocolate to times past this weekend and listening to this awesome remix

And yes, I may have downloaded it.

I am posting this because I know that all of you have gotten the robocall and just thought...Wow, I wonder what happened to that Tom Champion Remix!
