Hi all! I'm brand new here (moved on Wednesday from Seattle) and I live in between Porter and Davis Square. What are some cool places to check out. Stores, restaurants, coffee shops, anything really. I'm a vegetarian, so any good veggie restaurant suggestions would be appreciated too. Of course places in Cambridge or near the Longwood Medical area are good too.

Date: 2004-08-27 10:28 am (UTC)In Davis there's Diesel which is good for coffee. For breakfast check out Soundbites in Ball Square not too far away, they give you a ton of fresh fruits which I find great and the food is amazing. Both I believe have good vegetarian options.

Date: 2004-08-27 10:30 am (UTC)also i second christopher's for veggie eating-out, and if you like indian there are two indian restaurants in davis - i've only been to diva but they have a huge veggie selection, including a nice (and big!) set dinner. it's not cheap but you get a lot of good food.

Date: 2004-08-27 10:35 am (UTC)There's a nice New Age bookstore on Mass Ave, a bit past the post office, called Unicorn Books.
I also like Diesel Cafe and Soundbites.
There's a beautiful gift shop called (I think) Sign of the Dove, in the same building as the CVS. Great handmade and unique items.
Also, in the J.F. Kennedy School on Elm St just past Star, Somerville residents can use the pool for a pittance (like $2 or 3).
I'm an omnivore, so I don't have any good veggie suggestions. I like the Indian food at Diva, and have had "vegetarian" dishes there, but who knows if they use chicken stock or something.

Date: 2004-09-01 11:09 am (UTC)Technically, Massachusetts law requires you to get a MA driving license and car registration within 30 days of moving to the state. If you get stopped while driving, you could get a ticket (or an extra ticket) for using your old paperwork...though many cops just give warnings. Almost all state police target cars with out-of-state plates when giving speeding tickets. And local officials ticketing parked cars target out-of-state plates as well. So it's to your advantage to get to the RMV reasonably soon.

Date: 2004-09-01 11:14 am (UTC)I got a library card, actually!
I'm not driving here, that's one of the reasons I don't want to change my license. I don't have a car, and I'm not planning to get one!

Date: 2004-09-01 12:16 pm (UTC)I don't have a car and don't drive. Therefore the RMV shouldn't give a flying fuck where my license is from.

Date: 2004-08-27 10:51 am (UTC)I second the recommendation on Diesel Cafe.
Club Passim in Harvard Sq. serves great vegetarian meals; you also might find interesting ethnic restaurants w/ veggie selections in the Porter Exchange; also, I highly recommend The Middle East (you can get dinner AND see a concert all at the same place).
Boston's music scene is hopping, so no matter what style you're into, you can usually find 2-4 concerts per month to attend in any genre.
Btw, noticed in your profile that your birthday is April 11th...as is mine.

Date: 2004-08-27 01:41 pm (UTC)I love Johnny D's (http://www.johnnydsuptown.com/) for its live concerts and very good food. Davis sq.
Manray night club (http://angeldustrial.com/ray/) is another great place is in Cambridge. It is hard to describe... Also depends on your personal taste... I don't want to set any expectations or bias you, so hit the link and read... Central sq.
MIT museum (http://web.mit.edu/museum/) is a very interesting place! I take there all my friends who come visit us in Boston. I was there hundreds of times - still find it interesting :) Central sq.
Museum of Science (http://www.mos.org/) Science Park T stop (green line) or ten-minute walking distance from Charles MGH (red line)
Harvard University Art Museums (http://www.harvard.edu/museums/) (Sackler, Fogg, and Bush – not big but very nice). They have a day (once a week or a month) when enrtance is for free – call and ask about it. They work Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Harvard sq. red line
Also I took the tour over the Harvard campus – it was interesting too :)
You can order free tickets or coupons to some great pleces in Boston (MFA, Science museum, etc.) through public libraries.
Do you have a car? Let me know if you need a ride... we can try to arrange something!

Date: 2004-08-27 06:54 pm (UTC)I third or fifth or whatever the Diesel rec. And the Blue Shirt, for veggie. The Somerville Theater has cheap second-run movies (and is often playing something interesting) and some concerts as well.
Sugar & Spice is a fairly new, tasty, reasonably priced Thai place on Mass Ave just on the outbound side of Porter. I'm not vegetarian so I haven't really investigated that aspect of the menu but it's Thai so I'm sure it has useful stuff.
Ace Wheelworks, on Elm street right behind Porter, is my beloved bike shop. And there's a great bike path that goes through Davis and continues about ten miles to Bedford; very nice if you're into that sort of thing (or walking or rollerblading or whatever).
The view from the roof of the Tufts library is really pretty.

Date: 2004-08-27 09:36 pm (UTC)Speaking of Namaskar, that's a yummy Indian restaurant. Diva, up the street a block or so, is also yummy.
Anna's Taqueria (on Elm and also in Porter Sq., same building as Pier 1) has a very yummy grilled vegetable burrito, but don't get the rice -- I hear they use chicken stock to make it.
Blue Shirt Cafe has excellent smoothies.
There is a stealth donut bakery at the intersection of Morrison and Highland Road (NOT Highland Ave.). It's unmarked, but you can smell it, and if their door is open, you can walk in and buy fresh donuts for like 25 cents apiece.

Date: 2004-08-28 02:59 pm (UTC)"Martsa on Elm" -- very yummy. Their "ice coffee" is actually a european style cafe frappee, and quite wonderful. Tibetan is quite similar to Indian, only, of course, not. :)
aha!
Date: 2004-08-30 06:54 pm (UTC)Elephant Walk
Date: 2004-08-28 07:36 am (UTC)The Elephant Walk (http://www.elephantwalk.com) between Davis and Porter Squares features French/Cambodian cuisine and boasts a vegan menu! Expect to pay over $12-15 for a large meal.
Count a second thumb up for Veggie Planet (http://www.veggieplanet.net/)/Club Passim in Harvard Square. You'll mostly find these yummy pizza squares with non-traditional toppings.
You can't go wrong with anything off of the Boston Vegetarian Society's restaurant list (http://www.bostonveg.org/restaurants/).
Enjoy!

Date: 2004-08-28 03:03 pm (UTC)Super cheap plates and dishes and stuff: China Fair, also on Mass. Ave.
I use http://www.tuftslife.com/dining heavily to figure out what's still open in Davis Sq.
