Hello! As a Jersey shore native, and very accustomed to being able to go to a nice beach easily, what are the best beaches/areas to go to for getting some sun and water fun? I know the pools don't open till the end of June and I am looking to go as local as possible. I have a car. I heard about the Medford lake but apparently you need to have a Medford residency so that stinks. Is there anything like that around here?

I went to Revere beach last summer and it was just so disgusting that my roommate and I left an hour in and went to the Dilboy pool instead.

That is if it does ever get to be beach weather before the end of June (I hope).

Some nifty links. ;)

Weigh in - what's the most dangerous intersection in Medford?

Just a friendly reminder:
Especially for folks who are moving this weekend, or just moved:

Do Not leave stuff on your porch or on the curb tonight!

Let's not have everyone's left-over cruft from moving become airborne. Bringing stuff in from your porch is not about saving items that you don't want to lose, it's about not leaving them to be tossed through your neighbor's window, into their car, etc.

Thanks!

So I didn't have a need for swim wear until recently. At the end of summer. When it's going-off the racks in favor of fall gear.

Since I like the look of swim trunks, but have a female form, I need something for my upper-half. I don't trust myself to tie a bikini top correctly and not have it fly open (slash don't like that look for myself.) So I need a swim top that's more cloth than a bikini, but less than a long-sleeve shirt looking thing that I saw at Olympia Sports in the Pru.

I've also tried the City Sports in Downtown Crossing and Back Bay and nuzzled the summer clearance in two Marshalls.

So suggestions besides the other City Sports locations? If I can get to it on a monthly LinkPass and not have to bug a friend to drive me or pay-up for the commuter rail ride, that would be good.

Hello, friends! Have you ever been swimming at the Dilboy pool? How is it? Is it remotely possible to do laps there, or should I not bother with that? Is it a nice place to relax/cool off/lay out?

Thanks in advance for any info you may have!

Has anyone been to the swimming pool in Foss Park in Winter Hill? I saw it for the first time while walking Broadway for this past weekend's SomerStreets festival. It was overflowing with kids to the point I didn't want to go near it, but it was the prime time for that, since it was a weekend day right around noon. Is it always stuffed with children? Is it cleaned up well at all?

DCR has only a little bit of information on it:
Latta Brothers Memorial Swimming and Wading Pool, McGrath Highway, (617) 666-9236

The Charles River Swimming Club is looking for volunteers to help put on this annual swimming race, which intends to celebrate all the work that has gone into cleaning up the Charles and raise awareness of ongoing issues and efforts. Needed are general volunteers (no experience necessary) for timing, registration etc. and kayakers for safety support (kayaks provided by Community Boating). Time commitment is from 6:30am to about 10:30am on Sunday, 7/25.

Check www.charlesriverswimmingclub.org for details and please email raceinfo at charlesriverswimmingclub.org if interested.

Please help put on this event, which was postponed from its original date on 7/11 due to heavy rainfalls the previous day. You will make it possible for 150 people to swim in the Charles River, something many of them have looked forward to for a long time.

Thank you!
Ulla

Maybe everyone else has known this for years, but I hadn't realized that there was a totally free public outdoor swimming pool a pleasant five-minute bike ride from Davis.

It's not the prettiest or quietest pool in the world of course, but at that ridiculous level of convenience, I foresee a lot of fifteen-minute morning dips in my summer.

Summer hours, according to one site I found are:

10:00am - 7:00pm weekdays
11:00am - 7:00pm weekends

Where do you swim laps in the winter around here? How do you like the place?

I only know of the Kennedy Pool near Porter, but I have not gone yet - have you?

My housemate said that she couldn't find a program that teaches little kids (think preschool age) basic swimming lessons that actually keeps them safe. But I'd be really surprised if there wasn't something like this nearby. The idea being that the kids should be able to float and tread water and maybe doggie paddle so that they don't panic and drown if they happen to wander into the deeper end of the pool or out a bit further in the pond (like they did yesterday, eek!).

The class that my housemate paid for (at the Kennedy pool, I believe) just put the kids in flotation devices and never taught them any independent swimming.

Anyone know of anything in the Somerville area? (Within a couple of miles of our fair city).

Pardon me if this has been asked/discussed before, but I can't figure out which tag it would be labeled under. Can anyone recommend one of the beaches nearby? I have a car, but I'd rather it would be less than an hour's drive. Half-hour would be better.

Has anyone taken Water Aerobics at the Kennedy School? If so can you provide a review, also do you know if people wear t shirts in the pool? I have looked in the Swimming Tag.

If anyone else has any suggestions of where I can take water aerobics I'd love to hear them.

I've searched through the memories, and the numbers to call on the Medford City Hall website were disconnected.  I'm a new Medford resident, and wanted to take advantage of the Tufts Pool.

Does anyone know the phone number to call in reference to getting a membership to the Tufts Pool?  Or when I can go there to get a ID?
Thanks!

Anyone taken swim lessons at the Kennedy pool?  I was wondering how long the lessons are and if the classes are mixed (classes shared with kids?)  or if they are adult only?  Any input would be great. thanks.

i just perused the archives about swimming and with great joy, i learned about the tufts pool.  i called the city of medford and season passes are only $15 (yay!) but only for medford residents (boo!).  alas, i am a somervillian through and through.  does anyone know if there's any way for non-medford residents to use the pool?  or if there is some way to circumvent this whole pesky resident thing?  i have spent the morning daydreaming about swimming during my lunch break and now my dreams have been crushed.

This may be a bit premature, but I'm an optimist, so I'm linking back to my thread from 2 years ago with the swimming map in it.

Tons of people have added information to the map and it now has over 50 beaches, swimming holes, and open-air pools marked on it. I'm pretty proud of it.

in gallons and gallons. Really, I think the rain should just have to WAIT for people. We didn't ask to be in the path of a titanic monsoon!

(Anybody else out there soaked yesterday? Amazing, wasn't it?)

Someone asked here recently about the rates at the new Boston Sports Club.

I have the skinny here )
[identity profile] bluesauce.livejournal.com
I can't find this on their site at all, hence asking here(and yes, it probably IS a stupid question); does anybody know if the Boston Sports Club in Davis is going to have a pool?  I want to join a gym, but I'd love to find one with a pool.
