All groupons, all the time

I'm getting a little overwhelmed by all the groupon-type posts here. It's great that folks are sharing money-saving tips for local businesses, but I think we might be reaching a saturation point.
What if we created a davis_coupons community, and asked people to post these deals there and not here?

Date: 2010-09-28 02:34 am (UTC)So I thought I'd check further. Before last tuesday, the previous post about a voucher site had been on the 10th. There were 3 that day; one mentioning Lyndell's, and the other, from me, giving away a $50 Johnny D's door card, and someone else selling their MetroRock groupon-acquired card. And someone posted about a Zing! pizza deal on the 3rd (not in davis, but close and they deliver to DS).
so. That's 8 posts in the DS-lj about groupons or other voucher sites. 5 were heads up about offers (and yeah, 4 were posted by me, one, the zing! one, by m_b_w), 3 were offers of already purchased sites (one of which was a gift).
Out of 132 posts. That's 6% of the posts in the last month.
Is this really meriting a discussion of over 60 posts? It's own community? I feel silly even needing to have looked up all these stats for people...I was working today (for a change) and came home to find you'd all gone nuts.
It's NOT worth it's own community. It's not even worth this discussion, IMHO.

Date: 2010-09-27 04:52 pm (UTC)I did (mentally) question whether or not an earlier post about the best bus service from Boston -> NYC belonged in the Davis Square community - but it kicked up some nice discussion, people were friendly, and I suppose one off-topic post doesn't hurt the community too much.

Date: 2010-09-27 05:00 pm (UTC)I'm more likely to go in for the deal that way than by seeing someone's shared post here on LJ. A separate community for folks that don't want to personally join those services through their email might be a good idea.

Date: 2010-09-27 05:14 pm (UTC)Granted, I view this blog through Google Reader, so it takes me no time at all to ignore it. But honestly, you could just fend for yourselves and sign up with these sites if it's something you enjoy seeing. Leave this blog for people's free stuff, local news, information, cop stories, etc.

Date: 2010-09-27 05:21 pm (UTC)I mostly read via rss/google reader and find it easy to skip past what doesn't interest me. I vote for keeping them on this community.

Date: 2010-09-27 05:25 pm (UTC)But I really don't want to see this comm become all-ads. It would need to be a separate space, so discussion and questions didn't get marginalized, and so people can opt into them differently.

Date: 2010-09-27 05:33 pm (UTC)There are plenty of other posts that are frequent and that most people don't care about and that whose who do care about could easily learn of by subscribing to a mailing list or Facebook feed and I don't see what makes groupon special in that regard.

Date: 2010-09-28 02:14 am (UTC)On tuesday, there was one post about BuyWithMe (spike's)
On thursday, someone offered their expiring-that-day Johnny D's groupons, and then editing after he discovered that Johnny D's was not accepting them after all.
On Saturday, there was the post about Diva's groupon.
Today, someone was selling their leftover Brattle passes (which expire on 11/5. They happen to have gotten them through a groupon.
That does not count this post, which would be awfully meta.
So. 4/42, two of which were people offering vouchers they can't use, one of which was a note to let people know they couldn't use a voucher on that particular day.
So I wonder, are there actually too many posts about them, or is it that your perception, because you don't like them, that there are too many of them?

Date: 2010-09-28 02:01 pm (UTC)As for the responses to "where would you like a groupon", obviously people are going to want to get the the things they like for less money. We're all at least a little selfish that way.
