I posted this last year, but thought it would be nice to do it again, since it was about 95 degrees today. I and a few other people have compiled this map of places you can go swimming in the Boston area: Boston Area Swimming. A lot of the places are easily reachable by T.

I tried to embed the map here below a cut (Thanks Ron) but apparently Livejournal isn't accepting these javascript or flash widgets. Too bad.

You do it like this:

<lj-cut>

followed by whatever you want to put 'after the cut'.

There are some other options, which you can read about in this FAQ entry.

The closest place to Somerville is probably Sandy Beach in Winchester, off Mystic Valley Parkway. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to get there by T from Somerville. It's fairly close to the Wedgemere station of the Lowell commuter rail line, but that line doesn't stop anywhere in our city.

I've never been, but there seems to be a beach within a reasonable distance of the Winchester Center stop (and you can pick up the commuter rail in Porter). But it costs non-residents $30 for a summer pass to use the beach...

The commuter rail line in Porter Square doesn't go to Winchester.

Ugh. I just remembered this. The heat is getting to me! I usually ride either the Lowell or the Fitchburg lines to visit family, and I ride my bike to both, but my brain melted and I got confused...

Sigh.

Well, you can ride to West Medford and catch it there....but maybe I should triple check before I post again.

:)

Though if you're already on your bike and you've reached West Medford, you may as well keep riding to Sandy Beach.

Is there a public walking path across the isthmus between Upper and Lower Mystic Lakes? It looks like there's a boat club there, but they might allow the public to walk through. Then it would be about a 20 minute walk from Cambridge Street and the 350 bus to Sandy Beach, via Robin Hood Road and Lake Shore Drive.

That's the private Medford Boat Club, which has occupied that area for about a century. I don't think non-members can normally walk through it.

I'm hoping to make use of this tomorrow! Thanks.

For entries, LJ accepts most widgets (though it's primarily focusing on Flash videos that use the <embed> or <object> tags. You just click the "embed" link, insert the video/widget code, and you're all set. Doesn't include iframes or JavaScript, afaik, though, so the Platial widget won't fly. Same thing happens with the fancy Flickr badges. However, Flash games work just fine.

A lot of long distance swimmers use Upper Mystic Lake and start either from the docks at the south end or from one of the little "beaches" at the small parking lots. The water is great - I was there yesterday! If you start from a non-beach, you need to be careful about glass, as there's a lot of broken bottles there. That lake and Walden are the only "unrestricted" swimming lakes I know of, if you want to go long...

Sandy Beach, on Upper Mystic Lake, is already on your map.

Your map link does not work anymore. Have you moved your map to a new URL?
