I posted this last year, but thought it would be nice to do it again, since it was about 95 degrees today. I and a few other people have compiled this map of places you can go swimming in the Boston area: Boston Area Swimming. A lot of the places are easily reachable by T.

I tried to embed the map here below a cut (Thanks Ron) but apparently Livejournal isn't accepting these javascript or flash widgets. Too bad.

Does anyone one where I will be able to take swimming lessons around the davis square area?

Thanks,

So, rumor has it the Bally's Gym in Porter Square has a POOL!?

Is anyone a member? Have you been swimming? Is the pool totally grody? How is the gym as a whole?

I would really join just to swim but I'd love some opinions.

Also, what's the membership rate?

Thanks,

I'm interested in starting to do some track running. I checked the website for Tufts and couldn't really tell if their outdoor track facility was open to the general public or not. Does anyone know off hand? Or have a suggestion of where to go? I live right in the middle of Ball Square, and obviously since I'm starting an exercise routine, I'm willing to go where ever I need to go.

Also, has anyone been using the public pool at Kennedy? My aunt had told me about it a few months ago, but I never had the opportunity to check it out myself.

I started this Platial map of Places I know about close-ish to Boston for swimming.

Anyone can add places they know about to the map. No permissions or submissions.

Hey Peoples,

My girl friend is looking for a summer job lifeguarding at a pool - any ideas for local areas that might need life guards? I doubt there are any condos around here so I don't know where to check... Thanks for any help...

hey peeps. i'm looking for some swimming pool options in the area. so far, the only one i know of is the one at the j.f. kennedy school on cherry street by shaws. BUT apparently that pool is pretty much taken over by a swim team in the evenings, starting today.

does anyone know of some decent free swim or lap pools that are clean, less busy, and fairly cheap, and also welcome swimmers who aren't advanced?

tankers.

Does anyone know how the Tufts pool works? I have seen signs outside the doors saying that you need a pass to get in. Can you buy a pass or do you need to be a member? It also looked like there were only certain hours people could go in? Does anyone have more info? Also, is it nice and clean?

Alternatively, is there anywhere else in the area that someone could just go swim laps?

My mother in law is going to be in town and was looking for somewhere to swim.

Hey Davis, help me out! I'm on a search to find a decent swimmable freshwater lake within a 30-40 minute drive of the Boston/Somerville area. Preferably I'm looking for something with free parking that's fairly quiet and allows for real swimming (unlike Breakheart Reservation, which I visited today and they don't let you swim past a small roped-off area with water that didn't even come to my waist, lame). Also I'd prefer it to have been tested/treated this season. Any ideas? Any secret lakes you know of? Or not so secret? Thanks for the help!

1) So I'm finally going to learn how to swim! Has anyone heard anything particularly good/bad about the Somerville YMCA's adult swimming lessons? Or how about the CCAE -- that's my other option, although it's more expensive. Or a private instructor?

2) Secondly, I also need to learn how to ride a bike (don't ask). I am also considering taking the CCAE's course -- that is, if it is included in their fall semester offerings. Failing that, does anyone else know anyone who gives bike riding lessons?

Thanks!

Swimming?

Where can one go swimming around here? I have a car and am willing to travel up to 30 minutes outside the city. Usually we go to Walden Pond or Revere Beach, is there anywhere else? No pools please, I prefer natural places meant for swimming (clean lake, ocean, pond). It'd also be nice to know if there's a fee to get in.

Thanks!

hi all - i wanted to get some varied ideas of ways to get regular exercise around here.  i'm trying to avoid joining a gym- i prefer to do activities that are fun and challenging, and as an added benefit, happen to be good for your body.  e.g. climbing, sailing, swimming, hiking, but these are not the most convenient this tiime of year.  i think i need something that forces me to commit, and where i can see progress over time.  so i was thinking of signing up for a phys. ed. type class- maybe at a school, or if there are any continuing education type programs?  anything you know of in davis or nearby?

my other idea was joining a martial arts studio.  any you recommend?

also, suggestions for yoga/meditation studios are welcome too.  :)

Hi all! I'm brand new here (moved on Wednesday from Seattle) and I live in between Porter and Davis Square. What are some cool places to check out. Stores, restaurants, coffee shops, anything really. I'm a vegetarian, so any good veggie restaurant suggestions would be appreciated too. Of course places in Cambridge or near the Longwood Medical area are good too.

There is a pool at Russell Field (Off of Rindge, by Alewife). Apparently the City of Cambridge doesn't realize this, as they have No Clue (tm) about it.

Does anyone know what the story is? is this a City Pool, or privately owned? Hours of access or cost?

Thanks.
